I was thinking of playing A2 with a singleton, but I was very dissapointed playing A1 with a singleton because you can't get past lvl 40. Is it the same way in A2?

EDIT: Also the link to the avernum annotated maps don't seem to be working.

Silverchat is and has been down for a while, and the A2 level cap is 50.

Well, damn that is bad tidings... Is there a place where you can buy a ton of Knowledge Brews in A2?

There is indeed. It's been a while since I played it, but if memory serves, there is a house in the great cave at which a lady (Silverlocke?) will sell you potions, including knowledge brews. Buy everything, and she will restock. Of course buying everything several times takes so much money that to do it much becomes prohibitive without money from the character editor, but then you could just give yourself the potions, or even just give yourself the skills. . .

Silverlocke lives in a house on a hill in the south-western Avernum (not too far from the castle). However, she will not sell to you unless your reputation is pretty high.

Be careful with a word, as you would with a sword,
For it too has the power to kill.
However well placed word, unlike a well placed sword,
Can also have the power to heal.

However, when you get to the point of needing the Knowledge Brews, and when you've hit the level cap, you really should have earned an impressive reputation.

If my memory serves correctly, not too far from Silverlocke, there is an Empire camp, which is an unending encounter. Probably very difficult to take out on a singleton, but it allows you to pick up a lot of Steel armour/weapons/arrows etc, to make gold to buy potions from Silverlocke.

Good loop, when you're looking to boost your characters a bit more.

That's amazing. I've tramped all over Avernum and I've only found in her in A3.

Silverlocke is in A1 as well. She's in the middle of a lake in the Great Cave area, where she makes tea as well as potions.

—Alorael, who never managed to clean her out and make her restock in A1, incidentally.

The Empire camp that you call an unending loop is only unending in E2. In A2, they'll only rush out at you three times. Maybe five. But they do stop, entirely too soon.

And the fights get successively harder and harder. I believe there is only three.

I can understand why Jeff didn't make the encounter unending. But it certainly was fun in E2 - I'd keep my final save right there, and whenever I wanted to kick sme Empire tail, I'd load up and fry those poor little imp-loving momma's boys.
On a somewhat-related note, is the Third Empire Army encounter in A3 infinite? Or can you finally get in there?

What is the point of having a level cap other than to discourage playing a singleton?
