Eventually, I suppose, mages and clerics become formidable hand to hand fighters on their own. I like to build them sort of unbalanced though, leaving the fighting to my archer and swordsman. So for the most part, the magical portion of my group carries weapons as a mere formality. I think it'd be better rp if there were more magically appropriate weapons, like a staff or scepter. It would likely be enchanted to boost the power of spells, and not have anything to do with melee.

If you want one, you can always make it yourself. You'd just have to throw together a simple scenario with a custom item, take the item, and leave the scenario.

EDIT: Incidentally, there's nothing inherently "appropriate" about mages with staves, except that that's how we're used to seeing them. Why can't a mage have an enchanted sword or bow that increases his magical power?

There's the Witch's Staff in Witch Hunt. And of course, there's Morog's scepter which doubles as a missile weapon in Z-KR.

The same reason elves use bows, dwarves use axes, and midgets are sneaky: Tolkien. At the moment, I can only think of one fighting stereotype that doesn't originate with him.
