Hey, the teachers always said there was no ironclad rule. At least it got you close I guess. You at least had a 50-50 shot :P I was just finishing the little ditty as I'd heard it said. Ah, English, such a fun language. Just think about trying to figure out the whole ie ei thing after being taught only phonetics... -------------------- The word 'politics' is derived from the word 'poly', meaning 'many', and the word 'ticks', meaning 'blood sucking parasites'. English is a Germanic language. Therefore, dipthongs should be pronounced using Germanic phonetics (aka pronounce the latter of the two letters in an i+e dipthong). Wierd shoul be spelled as such. Either is pronounced [ai+thur], not [ee-thur]. -------------------- We're all amazed but not amused By all the things that you said you'd do. The French certainly don't pronounce their language like Latin, and they're a lot closer to Latin than we are to German. Basically, better than half of our words come from a source that isn't related to German, so we oughtn't get all pissy about English being pronounced unlike German is. (And on top of that, we're low-germanic and German is high-germanic.) -------------------- desperance -- je me souviens arena -- et je me souviens de vous Posts: 2449 | Registered: Monday, October 15 2001 07:00 |

Adding to the mix is English as spoken in America. Any relation to the Germanic roots is all but gone now. And you're right many "English" words have roots other than German. It is more like the Heinz 57 of languages. -------------------- The word 'politics' is derived from the word 'poly', meaning 'many', and the word 'ticks', meaning 'blood sucking parasites'. My problem isn't with either being used, it's with both being used. If we chose one way of pronouncing dipthongs, we should stick to it. Saying the dipthongs in weird and percieve as the same is irritating when they're spelled differently. If the majority of ie/ei dipthongs are pronounced Germanically (and they are), then we should pronounce them all that way. -------------------- We're all amazed but not amused By all the things that you said you'd do. We should just start calling our language American, not English, and say it as no roots.
