Title asks the question quite nicely. However, this post will be very mean and refuse to ask. It says "Tell me your favorite classical performer(s) now or be slowly tortured to death with sharp pointy objects!!!" The title is very nice though and will give you a cookie.

My favorite classical performer is Jacqueline du Pré. She's the most amazing cellist I've ever heard. In my opinion(which is guarded with mechanical pencils), she is better than Yo Yo Ma and the only reason he's considered the best cellist is because she died. Though he's good too.

Give me Christain lindberg or Jurgen van Rijen any time. Christian Lindberg is about the best trombonist on this planet, for all I know. One of the very few that managed to play "flight of the bumble bee" of Rimsky-Korsakov on a trombone. Believe me, it's difficult.

Jurgen van Rijen is a Dutch trombonist who is also very good.

To name a few: Bernard Haitink (conductor), Alastair Miles (bass), Leontyne Price (soprano), Placido Domingo (tenor), Sherrill Milnes (baritone), Tasmin Little (violin), Vladimir Ashkenazy (piano), Mtislav Rostropovich (cello).

This list is a little biased towards those whom I have seen perform and are still alive.

Classical?? That must mean Greco-Roman era, so I would have to go with Hercules. His performances were legendary.

I must agree about Christian Lindberg. Csardas > all else

I also like Yo Yo Ma. He's a great cellist.

Piano: Victor Berge. Hellz yeah.

Voice: Chanticleer. The concert of theirs I attended was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. It's incredible; when you're there hearing them, everything is so perfect you can't believe it's real. Haahhh!

And give me John Williams conducting the New York Philharmonic any day.

Oh yeah! I concur with you about Victor Berge and John Williams too.

Does it have to be classical though? Seems like a lot of these aren't technically classical.

Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre have deeply impressed me with just about everything I've heard.

For individual performers, I'm a fan of Leon Fleisher's piano, Itzhak Perlman's violin, and two flautists of the recorder variety: Dan Laurin for over the top flashy stuff, and Marion Verbruggen for brilliance.

Congratulations, Alorael. You have managed to make a rather sketchy phrase even sketchier. ^_^

Has anyone heard the piece On The Transmigration of Souls by John Adams? I saw the Baltimore Symphony perform it and it was incredible.

I am. I think everyone should be.

Hey, uh... what's with Bomber? Did (he/she/both/neither) suddenly decide that (he/she/both/neither) no longer supports the SW lifestyle? How sad.

I think it's because of me. I told him to shut up in some other topic. Now he seems to be completely derailing on all sides.

How nice to know that there more than one trombonists here.

Nah, he's appeared here several times before and done pretty much the same thing.

I don't know many classical performers by name. Now, composers...

But of the few I do know, I'd have to go with Hélène Grimaud.

I also like Yo Yo Ma, but have heard only little music by him (one performance together with Bobby McFerrin).

Oh, and if they don't need to be alive, Glenn Gould.
