The Democrats have, as any idiot can see, kicked ass this year. As it turns out, contrary to any popular analysis, so has the Left. Gay marriage bans have generally won very narrowly - and they seem to be facing their first defeat as legislature in Arizona: less than the sweep predicted. Marijuana laws failed, but by surprisingly narrow margins - 44% for in Nevada, as opposed to the polled 36%. Minimum wage laws have passed in every state they have been proposed, most by preposterous margins. Montana, one of the more reactionary hick states in the country, passed a minimum wage increase by over forty points. It might be hyperbolic, but I'm calling it right now: November 2006 will be remembered as the beginning of a new America, a stronger America, a better America. This has certainly not been a revolution - but it's certainly the biggest development in my lifetime. Our national nightmare is over. We passed a minimum wage increase here but successfully blocked a same-sex marriage ban. Too bad we also screwed over the illegal immigrants. Yea I know they shouldn't be here, but whatever. It's not your state, don't start arguing about it. 19 ballot propositions. That's a record. I can't believe that there are people who would vote against protecting animals. Only in Mesa would you see something like that. The governator is his own party. Anyway, I was bemused to watch the Democrats take over. I thought they would because of the low approval ratings of the Republican president and the seemingly constant scandals within their congressmen. Did anyone watch Comedy Central's Live Midterm Midtacular? Living in a congressional district where, as one of my friends likes to say, "you can't hit a Democrat with a sawed off shotgun," I am quite pleased by these results. My state re-elected a Democratic governor and turned a Republican senator out. Both propositions failed. Here's a little history. The Arizona constitution set aside a lot of land as a trust. When sold, the money from the sale of this land would go for public service projects, namely education. This is a great idea, and the two propositions call for the sale of some of this land. Well, a lot of it. Prop 106- Wants to change this. A board of trustees would be appointed to govern 694,000 acres of it. Sounds good, except that they could (and would) give these lands away for sale, but none of profit would go back to the schools. Bad deal. Prop 105- This sets aside 500,000 acres for open space. There is no board and the land is saved for when it is needed. But this land would have to be bought and have to go through the legislature. This prop is supported by the homebuilders association. Both these propositions are crap. I wish people could just conserve land with out wanting to sell it for their own interests. I also prefer to delay the celebration until 2008. A large portion of this victory was due to scandals that will be long forgotten by then. And California voters once again prove why direct democracy is a bad idea: If you vote to raise taxes you are a fiscal liberal. If you vote to limit spending you are a fiscal conservative. If you vote to limit taxes and raise spending, you are a fiscal idiot. We somehow managed to pass every single bond, including another 20 billion for roads, while defeating every measure with word "tax" in it, including campaign finance reform (funded by 0.2% corporate tax) and support for alternative energy research (funded by taxing oil companies). If that alternative energy research was a bond, rather than tax, it would have passed with overwhelming majority, just like stem cell research bonds did a few years ago, even though bond money has to be repayed double by all taxpayers and this tax was directed just against oil companies. EDIT: And we also passed Big Brother law (mandatory lifetime GPS tracking for all sex offenders), and just barely defeated parental notification proposition and the tricky emminent domain proposition whose nastier provisions would make zoning, environmental protection, and many other laws too expensive to enforce.
