Can you pass the US citizenship test? It turns out that a lot of natural-born US citizens cannot. Take the test and post your score.

I got a 19/20. I had no idea what form you need to apply for citizenship, not that I would ever need to know that one. :P

85% (17/20)

Only got three questions wrong:

3. In what year was the Constitution written? (I mixed it up with the date the Declaration of Independence was adopted  )

8. Which of the following amendments to the Constitution does NOT address or guarantee voting rights? (Excuse me if I haven't combed through every single amendment. That thing is rather long.)

14. Who selects the Supreme Court justices? (The site implied that the mistake I made here was somewhat common.)

Answers omitted. Just to be fair.

The amendments aren't that long.

100%. The citizenship form was a wild stab for me.

I wonder if someone would really think that New Zealand is a state. I mean, how dumb can someone be?
Don't answer that question. It's really sad that people don't know how many stripes are on the flag.

... No.

You mean to say that one of the ways you screen immigrants in the States is by asking them who said a famous line? Or asking them how many stripes are on your flag?

Quick, how many points on the Maple Leaf? Why?

--------------------
Take a real test.

It seems to be a B.C. test, though; only got 97/100.

I adore the descriptions given to each score range by MSNBC.
quote:
0-20%: Maybe you're still thinking too much about the Old Country -- and that's where you should probably be.

25-40%: Mmmm. Do you really want to be a citizen? This kind of performance isn't going to impress those nice immigration folks.

45-60%: Not too bad, but you really need to break out the civics books again -- word is, the INS is looking for an 80 percent score.

65-80%: Hey, you may make a good citizen yet! Look at your wrong answers and a little revision should do the trick.

85-100%: Welcome to the United States! (And, truth be told, you know more about this great land than most Americans.)
DIE !!!!!

That Supreme Court question was crap. The president doesn't appoint them, he nominates them. The Senate gets to make the final decision, thus, the Senate selects them. "Selects" was probably the worst word they could have chosen for that question anyway.

Also, I mixed up the "power to declare war" with the "power to make war." The president can send troops into a country to fight for up to 30 days without the approval on congress. When he does this, it pretty much makes the declaration of war a mere inevitable formality.

Clearly, we know more about the United States than most test writers.

I got a %100, but I couldn’t miss the opportunity to make fun of the test itself.

The US flag has 13 stripes, one for each of the 13 original colonies, a valid historical reason. Knowing that there were 13 colonies is an important part about knowing American history. I don't believe the number of points a maple leaf has any real historical significance. What the emblem on the flag is and why it is there would be a good question.

Besides, this is just a CNN, just for fun, poll.

Yes, the quote question was silly.
But, it is something that the average high schooler should know. Having it on an immigration test is dumb.

I've never taken a standardized American History class. It's a pity too, because I can't take one now without college admissions raising an eyebrow at why I'd possibly have two credits for American History. Comparative Politics and Government doesn't cover America anymore, so I'll have to take an American Government class sometime...

As a side topic, why is it that most Americans are so ignorant of world poltics? Is it our school system? How is it different from other countries?

Questions like that are supposed to test your loyalty towards America. They get even worse in the "character" section:

"If United States and [your country of birth] fight a war, which side will you fight on?"

And a bunch of other questions like that.

The questions you've seen on this test aren't even the hardest. I don't remember the full list, but here are some other questions:

1. What was the name of the ship on which Pilgrims came to America?

2. Who wrote "Star Spangled Banner"?

3. Who is the head of your local government?

Not to be snippy, but how can you mis-click on that test? It lets you change those answers over and over until you press the sumbit button.

19/20. And I was just talking to someone about naturalization, too. The name of the form never came up.

I got 19/19 because I refused to waste my time looking through the 13 original colonies thing. I mean come on, New Zealand; Washington D.C.?
