I'm sure someone here must know this. My brother was telling me about Halo recently and referred to it as a "first-person shootout" game. I could have sworn that it was called a first-person shooter. Which is correct? Or are both terms used?

I know FPS, namely First Person Shooter. I think your brother is wrong, you are right then. :)

I thought so. He is, after all, only 11 years old. :D Although he does play more video games than I do, since he is in sixth grade and therefore (almost by definition) has way too much time on his hands to do such things. (Cowboy duels… *dies laughing*)

It's definitely "first-person shooter."

I've also heard this genre referred to as "shoot 'em up"... but that is too incorrect. "Shoot 'em ups" are those where you stand there with a light gun (or similar) and shoot the screen full of badly rendered FMV baddies. At least, that's what we always deducted back in the arcades of the "old days."

I miss the good ole days of Street Fighters, Mortal Kombats and even the first one I played, which I think was Brutal. T'has been a while since I've paid homage to the good ole fashion beat 'em ups.

I'm fairly certain it's "first-person shooter".

I used to play Marathon with my brother when I was little (think I was about 10 when it came out). I used to like games like Mortal Kombat, but more so games like myst.

Yup, first person shooter is correct. Also third person shooter, too, I think. Someone should invent a second-person shooter game sometime...

Since the second person view is someone else referring to you, how would you make a second person shooter? My head hurts trying to figure it out.

Simple. The goal is to shoot yourself.

Some of the roleplays on this board come close to SPS.

I would think that a second-person perspective wouldn't work in that situation because the focus of your view would be at your character and not at what is happening around your character.

Or maybe you'd control a character who was looking straight at the camera, and the camera was the perspective of whatever bad guy the character happened to be shooting… :D

I suppose it could be a a First person shootout if the characters were playing hockey.
