The most recent incarnation of P.E.#1 has been credited with 4 posts, only one of which is on the "most recent posts" list, as post #0 of the Public Enemy thread.

How do we excuse that Alorael is the title holder for that post? Is he also Public Enemy #1? Or (a far more likely scenario) has Arancaytar begun his subversive plot to have all other moderators excommunicated (or shivved, depending on opportunity) so that the ascension can happen as scheduled (a week from this coming Tuesday)?

Inquiring, enquiring, etc. minds are waiting.

The explanation is farless spectacular unfortunately. See, when a topic is deleted, the UBB sometimes gets a hiccup.

The reason this didn't happen so much before is that questionable topics were locked and stripped of bad content, not deleted.

This way saves diskspace, but on the other hand I fear the next PPP will be riddled with moth holes.

That was the intention. The joke is that there is none.

Gosh, I'm new to this hazing business, but I think I have it under control. :P

I deleted the threads for speed. Previous experience suggested that PE might keep on creating new threads and I didn't want to let them pile up as I edited and locked. There was nothing worth preserving anyway except the dignity of the PPP.

You know, Aran, as a mod you don't just have to quote and append FYT. You can actually fix typos! If only there were a way to conceal that pesky "Edited by..." line.

—Alorael, who remembers back in the misty heydey of Misc. he created a thread that began with a warning that all posts within the thread were subject to indiscriminate summary alteration. And then he altered summarily and indiscriminately. Those were the days! Posts were real posts back then.

Alo, you do know you can change your displayed name before and after the edit, and the edited by line doesn't get updated... :phear:

Anyway, I might yet take more daring and controversial actions, but I don't want to edit summarily and indiscrimately on my second day on the job. First impressions and all. :P

Edit: Fear the stealth edit! -Aran (this is really me, yeah).

..yeah. Sure. I believe you... ;)

Could a moderator go Rampant and start doing that all over, without leaving incriminating evidence? We could have a witch hunt among the moderators, trying to find who's taking over the minds of the helpless newbs. You'd be the obvious suspect, though, so if the other mods want an elaborate hazing ritual..

It would seem that ordinary members could do this, but the displayed name refuses to change back nicely until something happens in the topic...maybe I'm not patient enough?

I assume that mod actions and IPs are logged somewhere. For all our sakes.

Also, the name changes according to the ways of UBB. Nuff said.

UBB uses the <small> tag to mark an edit. There's no way to duplicate it, it appears.

Although I've had some strange moments where, when I repeatedly edited a post, the "Edited by: " message got included in the text box.

Unless you do what I did above. However, this doesn't work if the displayed name is already taken, without a little impersonation trickery. Still, now I can claim that you edited my post.

Well, Saunders was referring to duplicating the "Edited by" line by writing it into the post itself. That doesn't work - you notice the difference in size.

Mh... "Manetheren" - is that a Wheel of Time reference, or from Song of Ice and Fire? I tend towards the former, but I always get things mixed up. :P

Wheel of Time, actually, but while I wasn't thinking about it I sort of had a background assumption of Thomas Covenant, so you're closer.

—Alorael, who wouldn't be too sure the UBB logs anything. Remember, this is the UBB. If it can be useless it will be useless.

Well, yes, but under that assumption it would probably log just what you don't want logged...

The hiccup resulted because the programmer who wrote it never conceived of deleting a thread and what would happen to the next thread started.

You had similar types of oversights in other programs. In the really old days when dinosaurs roamed the earth and PCs were still new. The word processor WordStar had a version designed for all floppy drive systems that when placed on the first hard drive computers had trouble accessing drive a: files. It would only see files on the hard drive c: or could be switched exclusively to the floppy.

Don't expect the problem to ever be fixed.

Interestingly, you can see screenshots from the UBB admin interface and notice that there is a newer version of UBB that actually uses a real database.

But unfotunately, formatted and colored text here is not an option due to the heedless disabling of HTML. :P

To limit the scope of insanity inflicted by disgruntled members.

—Alorael, who remembers that making Galactic Core (before it was RWG) an HTML-enabled forum was disastrous. General would be worse.

"Manethrall" would be the closest to "Manetheren" if you were thinking of Covenant. A Manethrall being, of course, a Ramen leader.

To be honest, any page can be made disastrous with blink tags and scrolling texts.

But as for UBB code, I really miss an underlined and a strike-through format.

My subconscious somehow decided that the Ramen (whose name always makes me chuckle), who include Manethralls, must live in Manetheren. It makes sense if you're subconcious.

—Alorael, who wonders if there is a subconscious forum below SubTerra and, if so, what the posts are like.
