...years ago I recognized my kinship with all living beings, and I made up my mind then that I was not one bit better than the meanest on earth. I said then, and I say now, that while there is a lower class, I am in it; and while there is a criminal element, I am of it; and while there is a soul in prison, I am not free. --Eugene Victor Debs EDIT: Poor, poor autocensor. It's been nice knowing you... EDIT: Addendum: This all really needs to stop. When I saw Aran say "A community should stick together," I wholeheartedly agreed. This, however, is not sticking together. This is madness, pure and simple. Getting tons of people banned won't solve anything. It won't prove a point, and it won't help Spidweb stay half-coherent... let the insanity cease for a moment, so we can see what we're doing. I just don't get it... Alec, I expected better from you, too. Your appropriation of his words for this cause reeks. Eugene Debs crusaded on behalf of people who were treated unfairly. But he crusaded on behalf of those who were born into injustice. He fought for those who were born into a working class that knew more dreadful conditions than ours does today. He fought for those whose entire lives were being manipulated and exploited, and for those who were in jail. He did not fight for the "rights" of highly privileged, highly educated young men with an abundance of leisure time who were given a mild censure by the officers of a club they were never forced to participate in. Eugene Debs actively denounced racism. He refused to speak before segregated unions, and he held close the ideal of a "brotherhood of men." I doubt he would be too interested in the case of someone who was censured because he tried again and again to disrupt a community, often through using hate language like "f--," "n-----" and "b----" for its shock value. -- Slartucker Posts: 3560 | Registered: Wednesday, November 7 2001 08:00 |

quote:(sigh) Anyway, I'm surprised this just didn't get locked. And I also can't believe how much the censor failed. This topic is rather depressing. But it's encouraging to see people shrugging off the strange, disruptive, and largely pointless behavior of others... -------------------- Gamble with Gaea, and she eats your dice. I hate undead. Well, you wonder why I always dress in black, Why you never see bright colors on my back, And why does my appearance seem to have a somber tone. Well, there's a reason for the things that I have on. I wear the black for the poor and the beaten down, Livin' in the hopeless, hungry side of town, I wear it for the prisoner who has long paid for his crime, But is there because he's a victim of the times. I wear the black for those who never read, Or listened to the words that Jesus said, About the road to happiness through love and charity, Why, you'd think He's talking straight to you and me. Well, we're doin' mighty fine, I do suppose, In our streak of lightnin' cars and fancy clothes, But just so we're reminded of the ones who are held back, Up front there ought 'a be a Man In Black. I wear it for the sick and lonely old, For the reckless ones whose bad trip left them cold, I wear the black in mournin' for the lives that could have been, Each week we lose a hundred fine young men. And, I wear it for the thousands who have died, Believen' that the Lord was on their side, I wear it for another hundred thousand who have died, Believen' that we all were on their side. Well, there's things that never will be right I know, And things need changin' everywhere you go, But 'til we start to make a move to make a few things right, You'll never see me wear a suit of white. Ah, I'd love to wear a rainbow every day, And tell the world that everything's OK, But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back, 'Till things are brighter, I'm the Man In Black. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Yes. I gradually grew weirder, but when I woke up last Saturday I realized I'dbeen transported to Fluffy Turtle Land in my sleep. It's a bit disorienting. After all, this is a second home to many of us - certainly so to me. I've been here longer than I've been in some schools. I've moved twice, almost three times, since I joined. And then it goes haywire like that. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. I always knew SW was kind of weird, but wow. I remember being away for 24 hours and coming back and hardly recognizing the place. I'm just glad I stayed out of all of it, some was just too intense and the rest was just plain stupid and crazy. Y'know what? Alec, if you'd kindly stop leaving for good, then coming back, it'd be much appreciated. Make up your bloody mind, one way or another. Last time I was here, you had been temp-banned and were going to have "too much pride" to return. Now, you're back and leaving, again. Point?
