All right, a general question then. If this is being designed specifically to capture "personality" differences on the spidweb boards, what distinctions are most important to capture? So far, there are a few suggested by specific threads (like prescriptivist / descriptivist) and a few that are more general (jackassness / oversensitivity, being an attention whore). Oldbies, what are the timeless personality conflicts of the boards?

Deep conflicts appear mainly in political debates and roleplays. From the traditional divides in those areas, perhaps we can map the differences onto this personality scale in some way?

Well, what are the traditional divides in those areas? RPs in particular someone's gonna have to lend a hand deciphering.

Suggested humour rocks so much!

I have nothing to add to this thread, since I tend to avoid any conflicts.

Self-centeredness versus cooperation... there are those who warp entire stories to fit their character, and there are those who adapt their character to the story everyone else has agreed on. I'm certain there are better words for it, though.

Mock/Argue. When someone says something you think is stupid, do you explain what you consider to be the flaw in their argument, or just call them stupid?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone, these are good.

Stew, you don't sound stupid; they're mildly specialized terms relating to linguistic philosophy, but they can be used more generally. There was a thread about them earlier. A good summary is here:

Actually, the conservative versus liberal distinction is very one-sided. So you can probably guess which side I'm on. :P

You can separate Spiderweb members into these categories:

Lurkers: Those looking through the keyhole.
Arctic Food: Those who own unused accounts.
Inquirers: Those who come to ask a question and leave.
Half-Sanitied Ones: Those who start a big welcome topic but are never seen again.
Spammers: Those who love to post and post a lot and have little to the post. (^___^)
Trolls: Those who don't post much but do not actually read the topic.
Oldbies: Those who have a lot of posts and are still here.
Newbies: See spammers.
Semi-Lurkers: Those who read the board and only post when people get suspicious of their death.
RW: He who does not post anyway.

A new theory:

RW, at one point in His earthly lifespan, posted on these forums. After all, section 13 could be said to be his company message board. However, since no posts (nor an account) made by RW remain, I surmise that the first has been lost to a purge, and the second to a crash.

Unless it was not deleted, but is unrecognizable from the profile.

What would happen if it were to be found? It would be a religious upheaval among the Cult! o_O

Since you appear to be honestly interested... HERE.

Spend a while reading those topics, and see if your brain doesn't explode. Best strategy is to just ignore them, honestly.

Specifically, read THIS. Try not to think too hard about it.

Dude. There's no difference between the two anymore.

How about a meaningful political difference? Right versus left?

I warned you. But did you listen? No...

Those forums are best lurked in, as then nobody can realize that you were there. Then, you don't get tagged with implants or nailed by needle/ferrets.

I'm proud to say that I have no idea what most of it means...

You don't need to know what most of it means. Such is the glory of the implants.

So wait- what's liberalism, but a belief in a society which respects all individuals' common rights above all else? The result of that is capitalism, which has created the same sort of aristocracy that conservatism has taken the chalice in defending.

Conservatism admittedly is a lot more harsh on freedoms than liberalism would appear to be, but on the other hand, conservatives constantly phrase their oppression in liberalistic language. It's all to defend America's right to property. Locke himself couldn't make a society more barbaric and intolerable.

Plus, the vast majority of oldbies cannot be classified as being "liberal." I am not alone in the belief that freedom is massively overrated. It's required, maybe, but will never be a value unto itself.

Isn't that libertarianism? Or are the two synonymous?

The two words mean the same thing. ("Liberty" is the root of both.)

But if there is no difference between conservative and liberal, then why is it that the groups who would describe themselves as either loathe each other with a passion? Are they just misusing the labels, or are they actually alike and just not seeing it?

Conservative and liberal are terms with meanings that fluctuate greatly over time (and also place). It does seem to me that they tend to be used in ways that are not terribly meaningful beyond the level of distinguishing who's on your team and who can you shoot the spitwads at.
