I thought about starting a new poll to get some sort of average age for this board, but then I remembered that the birthdays are saved in the member database as well, so I decided to make a few stats from that and post them. And then I realized that only about 880 members even have a birthday set, and these people might not even be the same ones as the ones who regularly post here.

So there is still a poll, grouped into as sensible a scale as I could come up with, and then I'm going to post the stats that I got from the database.

Here's how it works: There are 7 questions, one for each age range. Your age is going to be in one of the questions; so put in your age in that question and answer the others with "younger than" /"older than". That was the way to get the greatest age range without messing up the poll.

And please don't try to be clever and put in contradictory responses such as "younger than 20", "older than 50", etc.

Also, to keep the sample accurate, if you clicked "Don't wish to answer" in the first one, answer all the others with "younger than". It seems as if that would distort the result, but in fact it's easy to subtract these afterwards.

And now, as promised, the stats. These stats are for every month since the database was started, but the age is always calculated relative to "now". The difference is only due to people changing/displaying/deleting their birthdates or new members joining.

In August 2005:

867 listed their age.
The age range is from 2.81 - 103.09 years
The average is 24.22 years
The standard deviation is 10.82 years.

September 2005:

Count: 895
Range: 2.81-103.09 years
Average: 24.28 years
Deviation: 10.84

October 2005:

Count: 908
Range: "
Average: 24.21 years
Deviation: 10.81 years

November 2005:

Count: 925
Range: "
Average: 24.24 years
Deviation: 11.07 years

December 2005:

((I started to post this, but then realized I royally messed up the data last month by somehow failing to take into account birthdays before 1970, ie with timestamps<0. So I couldn't.))

Hehe, it's easy to see that Alo has voted. :P

And hooray for me! I just might be the youngest regular member. Along with some others, and excluding Drakey.

EDIT: Fixed Drakey.

No, not really. I know I'm 14-16 but not 12-14 because it's getting pretty close to my birthday (and so in this case, my age could be closest rounded to 15, not 13).

As in 20-22, 22-24? I wouldn't say so - someone a bit younger than 22 would take the first, and someone a bit older would take the second. Not taking into the account of someone celebrating their birthday today, naturally.

Why on earth would one not just make it unambiguous by making it 20-21 and 22-23? If someone who's 22 isn't supposed to pick 20-22, then why call it 20-22 instead of 20-21?

They're open intervals, not closed ones. :P

Also, the biggest reason is probably that I didn't think of it at the time.

This should be a wake up call for all that have not set their birthday and are not against it to do it.

that explains a lot. Well, no. actually it does not. there are more people as smart as Alorael, but they are younger. No offence, Alorael.

khoth, the numbers don't overlap. as Notty said (well, not really), you have to pick the category that best suits you, so I'm 16, but this year I'll be 17, so I take the category of 16-18.

17 sounds much better then 16, don't you think?

17 sounds much older then 16. when you're 17, you're almost an adult, technicly, some stay teens until they're 40... but that's a rare exception. But 16 sounds much younger, more of a adolescence age then an adult age.

EDIT: I almost forgot, you're almost a year older then me! that means you can drive me to school in less than 2 years ;)

Interestingly different from the stats. Half the votes are 16-20, and almost all are 12-22. Rather different from a mean age of 24!

Mmph. I feel like an outlier now. Heh.

All y'all realise that the thing about Alorael being 54 years old is just a running joke, right?

Well, at this point, not so much "running" as "limping".

So let me get this straight: Alorael is a 54-year-old Korean transvestite of indeterminate gender?

Oy.

All my esteem and respect for you have now vanished, Alex.

—Alorael, who is 56, not 54. He is not Korean, not a businessman, and has no particular desire for cow products of any kind. His size and level of perspiration are both fairly average and his morphology is well within the commonly expected range of those who have one X and one Y chromosome.
