Just a question: Why was it causing everybody to get upset? It's not like I was insulting anybody with it. Would you have gotten any less upset if I had just put it in my sig? If so, why? It's not like little dashes below some pointless text instead of above it are going to bring a curse down on your family. I just don't see what was so bad about it.

It was just really annoying, lame and stupid. Something needless that was in no way amusing or useful. Sort of like this comment.

Yeah, but is it really something to get angry over? Do people get angry when they show a bad episode of the Simpsons several times in a row? Sure it's annoying, but not quite rage inducing.

We'd still rather that did not happen, and here we have the actual opportunity to influence this particularly annoying thing from happening again.

Most people weren't really angry as such. Most people were just moderately annoyed. I, however, was moderately pissed off for the sole fact that I have nothing better to do, and it seemed like something to do to pass time. Jeez, I have another 2 months left of holiday...I'd going to end up hurling myself off a cliff for amusement soon.

Well, if I start doing something annoying again, remember this phrase:

"You catch more bees with honey than with vinegar."

In other words, don't complain and hurl insults at me, just ask me nicely to stop.

Just do what I do when I get angry: write about something that makes you angry, and put it on a website for all to see. It's like screaming at people in public, but anonymous.

Or you could just resort to beating a tree down with your bare hands.

I really didn't care. I mean, I didn't like it, but its not as if I would hack the system to edit all your posts over it.

And yes, I would have got angry if they showed the same episode of The Simpsons several times in a row, but that happens anyway, and I don't watch it.

I was just trying to find out what "leetness" meant.

And then I learned too much from Wikipedia and shot an arrow thorugh my head to stop the pain.

I'm surprised you didn't know before. It gets used all the time all over the 'net. Not that it's a bad thing...

Yeah, some people have big problems with reading leetspeak. Personally, I have more trouble writing it. I can read it almost as good as I can read English, but then again, I can read upside-down and sideways fairly easily too.

That's the kind of attitude I like to see. You have your opinion, but don't try to force it down anybody's throat.

Edit: Satan's post (post number 666).

Here and Polaris are the only places where I really "hang out" on the internet, and even so go to Polaris rather infrequently. I belong to a few Yahoo groups, but Leetspeak has never cropped up in any of them.

And I tend to steer clear of anything that's even tangentially related to computer hacking. I find them difficult enough to use as it is when using them correctly

It's simply because anyone that uses Leet Speak is instantly jumped on by everyone else nearby and beaten over the head with a dictionary. I mean, appart from pissing everyone off there is no point. I don't even bother trying to read anything like that, theres no point in it.

Sometimes it's used to make fun of people who can't type. There is a point in using it for other reasons too. One being that noobs usually can't read it, so they can't detract from a discussion. Another reason is to keep discussions of illegal activities from being picked up by Government searches, though now they likely search for leetspeak as well.

Why would the government actually care? I mean, they ignore so much crime at the moment so what is the point in them looking for more?

They may not care, but they have to make it look like they're trying to do something. If it doesn't look like they're doing something good, they can't justify their paychecks. Just like when I helped decorate a Christmas tree in the school lobby for extra credit. I didn't actually do much, but I made it look like I did, so I still got extra credit.

Our government has better things to do. Like make sure our cops arn't looking up porn and saving it to the police network...again. Or ensuring the police force isnt taking photos of them using confiscated goods...again.

I think, perhaps, that there is somewhat of a difference between above and below the signature line and that that difference is likely what caused the outcry.

First of all, had it been in your signature I, at least, and likely others, would only have even seen it a couple times. I look at signatures once or twice and then tend to automatically skip over them as I read a thread.

Many people may have still thought it dumb and annoying, but less so because they would rarely actually see it. By inclusing it in your posts, it was forced upon our senses more often and the annoyance increased.
