I've never gone on MSN (or any form of live chat). Can I go on with a Mac, or is it just for PC?

I wasn't aware you ever used that line, Wise. And here I thought I was being original.

I'd be careful about grabbing everyone's AIM names off a message board if I were you. I put about 150 names on my list one day and then forgot who about 110 of them were. Now I get confused all the time.

You must have a special version of AIM if your buddies have to answer the phone to get instant messages.

MSN is unpleasant and I can never tell who anybody is, especially because you can change your name at will, but it is available for Mac.

[Edit: English good talking!]

—Alorael, who believes it is also included in iChat. Adium, Fire, and Proteus definitely include MSN as well as AIM and other instant messenger services.

I have Both (MSN and AIM), and MSN is way better. I agree with Alo in the fact that it's hard to tell who anybody is, especially because you can change your name at will, but you can always tell by their email address. Besides, MSN just added new features like being able to send winks and more cool stuff.

ADoS, that's why you put their moniker in the Notes section of their information.

I use AIM because it's what most of my friends use and I see no reason to change. My sister uses MSN, and I really dislike its appearance. Not that that matters or anything.

With iChat, if you add someone to your address book, they appear in your buddy list as their name, not their screenname.

Trillian. If there is one thing I've learnt concerning Instant Messengers, it is that it's far easier to use the client another person prefers than to persuade them to switch. And like hell I'm going to run 4 clients at the same time. I have no real preference - individually, all the programs (MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, AIM) more or less suck, though ICQ less so than the others.

On another note, does anyone here use Skype?

AIM's site keeps saying I have cookies or java off, which I don't (checked preferences to make sure), so I set up MSN; I like it so far.

You know, if you want to know people's AIM screen names, you could just look in their profiles. If there isn't an AIM screen name in someone's profile, it's probably because they either don't have one or don't want it to be public knowledge.

The database I'm building up will contain AIM monikers as well - but I'm not sure if it will be okay to display them in a search form. I am assuming that since this information is public in the profile, there is no harm in publishing it elsewhere, but there might well be an issue with that.

Also, I'm still interested in whether anyone has tried Skype. I use it, and it absolutely rocks. I'm a little uneasy communicating in voice rather than text with someone I don't really know, but it's a fascinating system.

I downloaded Skype and it looks pretty good. It's a good way to meet people, though I don't know anyone (besides you) that has Skype so I doubt I'll be using it much.

Something I could never understand about voice chat: Why not use a phone instead?

Even for international calls, if both sides have to get DSL just to chat, your DSL bill will be higher than your phone bill would have been.

But if you already have broadband for other reasons, it's much easier just to use that.

In fact, if you talk a lot internationally (more than an hour per week), broadband is cheaper.

Unless, of course, you have to pay for internet access by the minute or bandwidth by the megabyte.

1. Given the current number of broadband users, that is an extremely unlikely scenario. You might as well argue that a computer is more expensive than a telephone.

2.The transfer rate for Skype's system is about 15.2 kbit per second maximum. The bandwidth of a dialup access is given by Wikipedia as about 53kbit per second maximum. Who is talking about broadband?

I guess the sound quality must have greatly improved in recent years. When I tried NetToPhone about 6 year ago, the sound was very bad even with college dorm's very fast connection.

As for number of broadband users, there are still plenty of people who are fine with dialup. (I don't want to waste 30$/month on DSL if I can do all my web-surfing with a 9$/month dialup.)
