Guys,

I need to be able to "protect" my pictures when I put them up onto mum's website (so people can't just click on them and press save). Is there a way, using Javascript, that I might be able to do this?

I'm sure that I can come up with something weird to do this (putting transparent boxes in front of the pictures), but using the proper method would probably be best.

Thanks.

The Website in question is here

Go to the CARDS section, and press on the pictures, it brings up a larger version of that picture. Those are the ones I want to protect. I'm uprading it to use Javasript popup (instead of opening a new file), but that addition isn't currently online.

I hope you can help...

1. I can't really see why you'd need to do this.

2. I'm not even sure if it's possible.

3. People can still steal the pictures just by taking a screenshot, even if they can be somehow "protected".

Personally, I'd suggest just editing in a tiny mark into each picture - your real name written in pixels, or the letters AM, or something, in an out-of-the-way corner of the image. That way, if someone does steal it and claim it as their own, you can point out the mark in the corner and say the picture is really yours.

It's possible to make is slightly annoying for IE-users to get at the pictures, but it's not possible to protect them well enough that there's any point in doing so.

It seems like there is a way to make it so, say, when right-clicked on the picture the 'Save' option is disabled. I have no idea, though, and I figure if you're willing to have your pictures on the Internet for all to see, then a few people with them on their hard drives shouldn't hurt you too badly.

It's kinda how the Internet is, as least currently.

Well I know some sites have that thing where you right-click and it says, "Sorry, these ladies are for members only!"

As for how to do that on your own filthy lucre, I couldn't tell you. Go to a bookstore and browse web-making tutorials. With luck, you won't even have to buy anything.

1. There is only one way to prevent people from downloading your pictures: Don't upload them.

2. There are several ways to make your website highly annoying to view in Internet Explorer (such as preventing right clicks, calling alerts when the mouse goes over a picture, etc.).

Conclusion: Don't try. You annoy your audience (at least those who haven't yet switched to Firefox), and it still takes less than a minute to get at the pictures.

Put up a copyright notice, and there you go.

However, if you *really* want to piss off people and prevent at least total computer illiterates from getting at the pictures, put this in your image tag.

<img src="http://yourpic" onRightClick="alert('PWNT!!!')" />Where "PWNT!!!" can be replaced with any other text that will appear in an alert window.

But then you can still bring up the source code, get the URL of the picture itself from there, paste it into the address bar, and then save the image using normal means. :D

But yeah, anyone without a basic html knowledge may be rendered clueless still.

Those are very beautiful pictures. But there is no way to prevent people from downloading and using them to create their own cards instead of buying yours.

Couldn't you use photoshop to alter the larger jpeg with some embossed letters? With a little experimenting you should come up with a font/pitch combo that is not extremely intrusive when viewed on the computer, but shows up well when printed.

That is what I said. It only succeeds in annoying people and keeping out the clueless. In fact, any site which implements the code I've posted above is sure to earn my undying hatred. :P
