The Lyceum has a live chat function; AIM has the same.

I think it would be neat and productive to work out a venue and a time for a congregation of candidates, to be turned into an organized debate/discussion and posted for the gawking of the public.

Preferably, we get as many candidates as we can involved. (I'm good for any day or time in the immediate future.)

Any time past 1PM central is fine with me, although I might be late if it's before 1:30.

Presumably this would be for candidates only (and probably somebody to run the discussion, the situation being as it is) to prevent deterioration?

Isn't the point of live debates to showcase to the PUBLIC the reactions and flaws of each candidate?

The log of the chat would, presumably, be copied and pasted onto a topic once completed.
I'd prefer this be done before the 25th (registration deadline).

Weekends are good, right? Why not Friday afternoon for Americans? That equals Friday evening for the Brits, and Saturday morning for Thuryl.
(Which is not a problem, as I have seen him on at such times.)

I should be available early Friday afternoon my time, if you want me to be there.

So drakey then will be handling the capture and display of the debate log? It needs to be a 3rd party that is trusted by the community to maintain the logs in their virgin format. I would volunteer, but I neither care enough nor have time enough to bother.

Every candidate claims that they will "uphold CoC, while protecting the free speech of members and maintaining a fun and friendly atmosphere".
Every single speech I've heard so far can be boiled down to the sentence above.

What will this debate show, aside from which candidate can make prettiest speeches?

I regret to say I will be unavailable for the weekend, as I said elsewhere. I hope this will not be held against me; I can return for further discussions next week.

Make Lucien "Juicy Lucy" McMahon a.k.a. Thuryl moderator!

Obviously, Alec is going to make the prettiest speech. That's why he wants this to happen: because he knows it will make him look good. DON'T FALL FOR IT! Vote for Thuryl!

Oh, BS. Since when have I insinuated that I will uphold the CoC? :P

Realistically, though, this aught to focus on the differences between the candidates. "Following the constitution", for example, does not prevent the Supreme Court from having difficulties. If I had my way in terms of setting up the discussion, I'd have each of the candidates go in a list (we can maybe have a sign-up), responding to various inquiries turn-by-turn:

+ What is your motivation for running?
+ What is your position on Guanxi in the community?
+ What level of perversion, implied or otherwise, is okay with you? In what context, if it makes a difference?
+ What sort of culture in the boards would you seek to promote, if any?
+ What level of unrelated discussion in any topic is fine with you, and how do plan on dealing with it?
+ How often should topics be locked?
+ Are conservatives on these boards being unfairly abused? Should this be curtailed?

Responses should be concise. My guess is that there will be a list that can be signed up for, and each question will reverse the list- first in line for the first question goes last for the last question, et cetera. I wouldn't mind moderating this discussion since I stand no chance at all of being elected whatsoever, although I would plan to participate.

EDIT: Oh yeah, as for "virgin format", I plan on editing any nonsense or out-of-turn outbursts from the chat, assuming I'm the one who makes it.

There hasn't been the slightest mention of the CoC in any of my elections posts, either. My platform is for flexible, non-invasive moderation, and moderating through a cookie cutter document is anathema to my principles.

I'd be up for the debate Friday afternoon, but I'd only be able to stick around for a short time.

Friday afternoon is fine. How does 11:00 Pacific sound? (That's about the earliest I'm feasibly going to be able to wake up; it's 1 PM TM-time, 2 PM (or early afternoon) for Drakey, and a little weird for Thuryl, but he's on break anyway).

I can deal with that time- 2:00 PM might be better, but eh.

Now anyway, any comments/suggestions/additions for the itinerary?

While it might be a minor inconvenience for some of you, and I haven't seen the Lyceum's live chat client, I'd like to propose that this debate be conducted over IRC. It's a much better chat client than AIM simply because it allows moderated chats, which would allow anyone who wanted to attend, not just the candidates.

That said, I'll likely be available tomorrow to oversee this if it happens on IRC and Drakey can't attend. I've got experience in officiating these sorts of things, at least.

That sounds like 7pm, over here, but someone's going to have to explain three things, to me, if they would be so kind.

1. What is IRC?
2. How do I use it?
3. Is it edible?

1. The first Google hit will tell you.

2. Download an IRC client and open it up.

3. Yes. It tastes delicious with some skribbane and oregano.

If it is in the morning for the Aussies, then it would have to be at around 10:30am. I play footy at 9, and would hate to miss out on the action.

Assuming it is done, of course.

Well, the currently proposed time would be 4 am Victorian time, so I don't think you need to worry about it conflicting with any of your other activities. :P

(Apologies for the double post. Bumping was necessary.)

Imby, Alec wants me to tell you that he's decided IRC is a good idea after all. Can you suggest a server and channel?
