The Empire, as public record will gladly show, always loses. The Empire lost the first Empire-Exile war. The Empire came out the worst of the players in the Plagues. The Empire did plenty of losing in the years to follow. It is now some hundreds of years after the reign of Prazac I. The Empire is ruled by a few doddering, inbred incompetents, the Imperial Army and Imperial Navy are continuously squabbling for prestige and funding, and Avernum is worse. There is civil war on the horizon. An Empire that rules dozens of continents (advances in shipmaking and scrying have proven that the Empire is far smaller, with respect to the cosmos, than it likes to believe) and thousands of miles of cavern cannot retain control over all of it. Some would be nice. The greatest civil conflict is approaching the biggest, most diverse, and most hideously incompetent and overstretched government the universe will know for some time. And the Empire, as public record will gladly show, always loses. ... The tide of separatist movements would begin, appropriately enough, in Avernum, where bitterness over centuries of Imperial misrule since the reunification have come to a head. While Avernum has no unified government as it did in the first War, several powerful factions seem to be arising from the ashes -- as down there the government hardly even bothers pretending it maintains control -- and, given that the porous caverns will offer easy transport for any group of warring factions, they may stand to become the most influential on the course of Imperial history. Shao's Legions were the first to revolt, but more would certainly follow. -- House rules: First, no unreasonably unrealistic behavior unless consented to by all affected parties. This is called drawbridging and it was the bane of this RP's last incarnation. Second, play by the most decent facsimile of the golden rule possible. Third, no overpowered factions, no continent-rulers, and no monopolies. Yes, these things have existed in history, but they make for a damn poor RP. Fourth, new factions should arise from the Empire, unless arrangements have been made otherwise. Fifth, if 'We aren't human' becomes an excuse too often, reconsider why you're playing as the race you are. Sixth, the Empire hates everyone equally, effectively blocks most easy expansion, and most certainly won't make any deals with you. Seventh, all four canon continents share a land connection and all land on Ermarian shares connection by the cave-system. Connection to the cave-system is a trait essentially universal to all factions. While this means you can basically pull the equivalent of marching from New Guinea to Greenland, things work out better that way. Eighth, the Knights Of The Old Republic space paradigm applies to Avernum: it, like space, is essentially limitless, but going outside of explored territory is asking for it and very little territory has been explored. Ninth, the Empire always loses. Have fun, everyone! -- (WORTH NOTING: Because I am lazy, in TEAL, Exile is the cave system and Avernum is the country; the Imperials use them interchangably, the Exiles/Avernites do not, but no one generally cares what they have to say. CANON NOTES: The conflict between humanity and the Vahnatai, along with the inviability of Micah's imperial line, lead to a dynastic and eventually national union between the Empire and Avernum. The Vahnatai are not one faction; the Vahnatai faction possessing Rentar-Ihrno is one of many. The tech level has advanced to one roughly coherent with the early Renaissance: early cannons, but no hand-cannons, no extensive use or study of explosives, and relatively limited understanding of physics. Heavy siege weapons are extremely expensive, nationalism is a non-factor, and mages of great power tend to be mercenary and, again, very expensive. Magic is in a defensive period (e.g. shielding is generally better and cheaper than attack magic), whereas tech is in an offensive period (e.g. weapons are generally more powerful than armor). ) -------------------- The biggest, the baddest, and the fattest. However, this faction takes a particularly dim view of pirate states, which it views as a threat to stability, to magical consortiums, which it views as competition, and to the Empire, which considers it a pack of high treasonists and has put a price on the head of every member Traditional Enemies: None NOTE: due to the mercenary nature of Shao's Legions, it is atypical for them to pursue a diplomatic grudge unless the other party poses a direct threat to their security Major Problems: Shao's Legions depend on the market for weapons and mercenaries; an outbreak of peace would pose a serious problem to their continued economic viability; the peasantry owes little personal loyalty to the Legions and bad conditions are likely to cause major rebellion in the absence of a real and powerful civilian government Flag Description: black defaced with a red saltire [ Monday, May 30, 2005 13:02: Message edited by: Custer XVI ] -------------------- The biggest, the baddest, and the fattest. New factions welcome. (Note: this is not a character-oriented RP; while plenty of factions might have a dynamic leader, understand that the FACTION and not the LEADER is the focus of the RP efforts.) I'll edit new ones into faction rolls as they come along. -------------------- The biggest, the baddest, and the fattest. Posts: 2367 | Registered: Friday, June 27 2003 07:00 |

Mmmmh... considering I RPed a colony of Ermarian for some time in Nationstates (www.nationstates.net), this could be interesting. I just need to get clear on when my next exams are scheduled, so I don't run into any problems with that. By Wednesday, I could try to write something. Since you mentioned all those dozens of non-canon continents, am I right in understanding that this particular "incarnation" of Ermarian can be added to at will, ie we can all just make something up? -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Divinity's Followers System of Government: Absolutist Theocracy Government Legitimacy: Moderate Government Stability: Extreme Location: Isle of Bigail Sphere of Greatest Influence: Sharamik Territory: Isle of Bigail Fiscal System: Ecclesial, all citizens bequeath an otherwise unthinkable amount of capital out of faith Fiscal Status: Very Good Economic Growth: Moderate Standard of Life: Monastic Imports: War Materiel, Cotton Exports: Food, Lumber, Furniture, Propaganda Population: 80,000 Recognized Species: Human (Non-humans are UnSaved) Populating Species: Humans Army: 20,000 Comparative Technology Level: Fair Army Training: Good NOTE: Whereas the Followers don't have any cannons and their personal armaments are mediocre, their monks are well-trained in the martial arts, and their prayer corps is formidable. A standard army exists, but only comprises 60% of the military. Army Discipline: Undying Diplomatic Status: Extremely amicable. High Priest Lucius is easily bribed by goods and services. Traditional Enemies: The Empire, admittedly liberalistic nations, non-corrupt nations Major Problems: Whistleblowing Clergy, Sex Scandals, Other Religions, Peasantry Withholding Possessions Flag Description: The flag of Divinity's Followers has a palm with fingers facing upwards, colored gold. The background is black on the top half and red on the bottom half. ---- The Divinity's Followers are essentially a state-sponsored cult. The citizens live either in crowded areas in cities, or crowded barracks on the expanses of farmland. The priests make incalculable wealth and live in mansions, whilst the commoners toil thanklessly in the belief that they will be saved, engendered in them from birth onwards. The populace is extremely forgiving of the clergy's wealth, and will mobilize for any task upon command. Faction Name: The Ratbane Clan System of Government: Tribal oligarchy Government Legitimacy: Extremely high Government Stability: Very high Location: The mountains of northeastern Valorim. Sphere of Greatest Influence: The forests and mountains of northern Monroe province Territory: In the mountains, bordered by the Guild lands to the west, the ocean in the east, and the foothills of southern Pralgad to the north. Fiscal System: Barter. Property is mostly communal, and they engage in very little trade with outsiders. Fiscal Status: Poor. Economic Growth: Almost none. Standard of Life: Very low. Imports: Food, rarely. Exports: Labor, also rarely. Population: About 20,000. Recognized Species: Nephilim. Other Nephilim are generally welcome; other non-human species are tolerated as long as they keep their distance. They will sometimes deal with humans, but only when desperate. Populating Species: Nephilim. Army: N/A The Ratbane have no formal army. Most are skilled hunters and quite a few are ruthless bandits. Almost all have some skill with a bow, and a few are shamans as well. Comparative Technology Level: Very low. Army Training: Superb. Many of the Ratbane nephilim are hunters and bandits, and masterful at it. They have much less experience with stand-up fights, and avoid them whenever possible. Army Discipline: Very high. Diplomatic Status: No formal diplomatic relations. Nephilim and humans have never seen eye to eye, and the once-mighty Ratbane clan is still bitter. They have lived in isolation for ages, protected by the harsh terrain they call home, and only the Empire’s decline has made them bold enough to raid the human settlements below them. Traditional Enemies: All humans, and the Empire especially. Major Problems: Centuries of human encroachment have pushed the Ratbane into some of the highest, most inhospitable mountains on Ermarian. Agriculture is almost impossible, and the animals they hunt often insufficient. In recent years they have had to rely on banditry to make up the difference, and old hatreds are beginning to flare again on both sides. Flag Description: None. Am I allowed to do this? Here's mine, regardless. Shogarde Commune System of Government: True Communism Government Legitimacy: Moderate Government Stability: High Location: Northern Reaches Sphere of Greatest Influence: Damothar Islands Region Territory: Snowed plains/islands of far North Fiscal System: Commune/Basic Trade Fiscal Status: Poor/Staggering Economic Growth: Dwindling Standard of Life: Slightly Sub-Standard (considered Imports: Ores, Foodstuffs Exports: Ships, Fish, Ale, Mercenaries, Leather, War Population: 20-25,000 (if united) Recognized Species: Human, Nephil Populating Species: Human, Nephil Army: All men of Age, roughly 10-16,000 Comparative Technology Level: Poor Army Training: High* NOTE: Lacks formal training. Children raised for conflict due to the nature of the region. Comparitive to the Spartans, minus the tactics. These guys stick to hit-and-run amphibious assaults.) Army Discipline: Fair Diplomatic Status: Likeable, a good ally. Currently lacking an actual agreement with any one (or more) faction Traditional Enemies: Besides giants, none. Major Problems: Reckless nature, drunken warriors, distant homeland. Flag Description: (White) Hand gripping a war-axe, on an extremely deep red (in tradition, blood soaked) background. Clan standards vary, ranging from simple stripes to elaborate coat-of-arms. --- Call 'em "vikings", basically. (I'm separating these two posts for what should be obvious reasons.) ---- A typically matted and destitute nephilim walks into the Great Hall whilst carrying an atypically ornate and small sack of gold, whilst carrying a large, burlap bag. "Chief... Chief!" "What? What is it? And what are you carrying?" The nephil dumps his heavy load, letting the bag open. Red, plump apples tumble across the floor. The chief seems a bit astounded. "Where did you get these ripe fruits?" "I... These men in robes, they gave it to me. They also gave me this, and told me to give both to you." The nephil reaches into his fur and produces a small note written on paper lined with gold leaf. Dear Chieftain of the Ratbane Clan, These apples grow well in Bigail. The offer we have for you is a generous one; at the simple cost of your freshest of corpses, you will no longer have starvation which creates more of them. Our spies know where your cemetaries are; if you allow us uninhibited access to them, we will give you payments in food healthier than any you could grow on your own proportionate to the corpses we unearth. Think over this offer well. We will consider it extended if you post a sentry at the graveyard's entrance with three spears in his hand. We do not want to negotiate unnecessarily or use coercion to have our deal; hold four spears if our offers are inadequate, and hold any other number to stop the trade. We will not contact you in person. Consider this deal and respond accordingly. Signed, Red Ribbon PS- I prefer to remain anonymous. I trust you understand. By the by, the gold this messanger carries is yours for the taking. We gave it to him to convince him to do this job for us. Shao's Legion a similarly written letter from a bribed messanger as well, offering lumber. Shogarde's Commune received a letter offering wheat in exchange for ships. ---- OOC: Which continent is the Shogarde Commune located in? And "Local Shaman Lore" is not a sphere of influence- a city or province might be, though. -------------------- 私のバラドですそしてころしたいいらればころす Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

quote:Ratbane is in the canon, if I'm not mistaken. One of the books you can pick up in E3 mentions it. IC: The Divinity spy arrived at the Nephilim graveyard to find four spears planted firmly in the ground, facing outward. On the nearest was a note tied in a red ribbon. It read: Your spies are not very good, stranger, if they have told you we will barter our fathers for gold. The corpses of our enemies dot the valleys below us, and those we treasure not. We will leave them to you in exchange for your food, and we trust one with so many eyes can find them. Oh, goodie, goodie! I wish to remain the same faction, but I think I'll make some significant changes first... EDIT: *scratches chin* Still too big? ... *ponders profusely* _____ Faction Name: Nature's Amethist System of Government: Aristocracy Note: Once a Monarchy encompassing the whole of the Empire, the queen has fallen and rule of the wood-nymphs has gone to her first generation of children. Government Legitimacy: High Note: While none question Amethist's right to rule, some of the number choose to remain dorment in their trees and let life happen without intervention. Government Stability: High Location: The forests north of Wainscotting. Sphere of Greatest Influence:They have very little influence anywhere, but the most in the center of the copse. RP note: Finding the specific tree of the daughter is very, very difficult. Please ensure that you go through said difficulty if you intend to find it and don't expect to be able to identify it without being told. It looks like all the other trees. Territory: Confined to forests edge and always receeding but not widely defined. Fiscal System: Barter Fiscal Status: Poor Economic Growth: Slowly growing as contacts are made. Standard of Life: Very-low (but when you're the life essence of a tree you don't need much in the way of possesions.) Imports: N/A No official imports since they don't really need anything but some are willing to trade for metal weapons, gemstones, and magical items. Exports: N/A No official exports but they are willing to trade alchemical ingredients, recipes, and sensitive information. Population: One for every tree on Wainscotting Peninsula. Believed to be between 20,000 and 30,000 Recognized Species: Wood-nymphs Populating Species: Wood-nymphs Only nymphs are counded among the populace but sprites, faires, animals, and a few of other species who choose to live in their woods. Army: Roughly 5,000 Note: Only those who have lived to be over 30 have enough strength to fight, and only those over 60 have any good level of magical training. Comparative Technology Level: Very-low for usage but fairly high for knowledge. Many a secret experiment has been conducted in the depths of the woods. Army Training: Medium-Low (recent years have shown the need for training but finding good trainers has been difficult) Army Discipline: Loyal Note: Strictly voluntary. Those who choose not to be dormant follow orders without question. Diplomatic Status: Before the former queen stirred them, they had mostly just hidden in the past, observing without much contact of the other species. With her fall also went her orders to kill all who made firewood of them. Amethist holds the same sentiment but knows much better their limitations. They hold a generally strained understanding with all other sapients, but very good rapport with sprites, faries, and animals. Traditional Enemies: The Empire and any sapient faction that harvests lumber without thought for the life of the trees. Major Problems: Wood Nymphs cannot wander far from their tree before losing power so expansion of territory is limited to the planting of more trees. Until a Nymph's tree is 30 years old, their powers are usually too weak to do anything other then appear in physical form. After that the next 30 years is spent learning how to use their in-born powers. Hand to hand combat is easier and quicker to learn but very few have enough knowledge to train the rest. The ever expanding population of other species who cut down trees in order to build things or clear land has been cutting their population and continues to do so. Also a few well placed forest fires could literally wipe them all out in a matter of days. Flag Description: A sky blue stripe on top, a dirt brown stripe on the bottom. The middle a sea of green with a lavendar starburst in the center. _____ After enduring great hardships under her mother's order and realizing the bredth of her request, Amethist has decided on a simpler, more peaceful goal. Teach the sapients that trees hold life and teach the nymphs to defend that life. IC: "Lucius, sir, they don't want us to use nephil corpses, and they still want the food." "..." "Sir?" "Wretched furballs. Fine, exhaust the supplies of corpses below them. They should be fresh enough to be... Somewhat feasible." "So you will use the corpses of humans, sir?" "Well, why not? It can be a way of securing a less-painful position in the Valley of Pathos. It'll be... An act of charity." "Fine. And what of the furballs? Do we still give them food?" "They let us wander their lands. Keep their type pacified, indeed. Food? Shao's headquarters - Execa - 200 days after secession "God damn it, Wade. You're telling me that the undead infestation to the south has a leader now? As in, they're fighting under a single banner as an organized army, much like ourselves?" "Well, sir, that's exactly what we had to expect," replied Colonel Meriwether to his flustered commander. "Without Imperial agents in Valorim to keep order, it was bound to go to pot quickly. Between Avernite settlement, looser ordinances on magecraft, and a destabilized situation to begin with, we're not exactly talking about the best environment for multilateral statecraft." Shao eyed Meriwether angrily. "You know as well as I do that the 'Imperial agents' nonsense was propaganda. We were the ones spreading that idiot rumor, and if there were Imperial agents of any kind, half of this chaos would be a no-show. Instead, we've got the lovely choice between dealing with subhumans, dealing with bandits, dealing with fanatics, and dealing with the dead." Meriwether grunted. "What is your instinct on this one?" "Kill them all and let the Emperors past know their own." Shao laughed. "Something seems so wrong about a treasonist invoking the Emperors, doesn't it? Well, so it goes. The only faction neighboring us without a robust trade in banditry are the giants; the fundamentalists are too far, the undead are certain to turn rogue before long, and the Nephilim are a pirate state hostile to our interests. Send feelers out to the giants: we're offering them vassalhood in exchange for help in our efforts to contain banditry and disorder on Valorim." "So our response to... "Red Ribbon"?" Shao thought on it. "It's a tempting offer, but we could always cut a deal with someone demanding something besides corpses for timber. Let it be known that, in the future, all corpses recovered - be they our own, those of enemies, or, circumstances permitting, those of allies - should be ceremonialized, crushed, and thrown into the sea as chum." *Thud* Lucius glanced over at his door surprisedly. Curiousity over-becoming him, he got up and opened the door. Outside, he found a tattered piece of parchment with near-illegible writing. Wincing, he was able to comprehend most of it. We hear you seek corpses. We can help, for a cost. Have one of your men contact us on the coastline. I'll be waiting. - KP Death Clan Posts: 58 | Registered: Tuesday, May 17 2005 07:00 |

"Wait up, Saccio!" The plump abbot stops in his mis-managed pace and opens the door. "Why, Lucius... You look--" "How the hell did someone from the lands of the dead manage to get in here?" "Why, you're absolutely correct. This smell is--" "I want the guards of this place to be awake, got it? Goddamn, you're one hell of a fatass to be the leader of the monastic order." "Right, yes sir, High Priest Lucius. With your bles--" "Wait up, fatzo. I actually have a job for you." "Sir?" "Tell the deadies that we'll give 'em some lumber for fortifications and a royal smathering of jewelry for as many corpses as they can spare." "Very well, I'll send my three swiftest delegates to run there." "Running? These aren't those..." Saccio pulls out three black stones and rubs them. One monk in black leaps through Lucius' open window, while the other two run up the stairs. Their movements are lightning-quick. "Dart. Ra. Eben. Go to Gebra and ask for corpses of all shapes and sizes. Offer them lumber and jewelry, of which we have plenty and are willing to offer decent portions of. Be swift. Come back alive with their response. Go with the Divine." The three dash out of the building almost without sound. "Lucius, I assure you, this task is complete." "Very well. You are dismissed, Saccio." "Then with your blessings, Father, I go." The abbot moves much more confidently than before. He has a smirk on his face as he moves. -------------------- 私のバラドですそしてころしたいいらればころす Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

Homurr, the most powerful of chief of the Ratbane, leads his warriors down through the foothills that mark the edge of his lands. Behind him are the pastures where his people tend their flocks. This is no mere raiding party, however: more than 200 Nephilim walk softly behind Homurr, the largest force of them to assemble in some time. Their goal is a small, hastily-built fort about two hours to the south, an armory and safehouse for the local human farmers. Patrols from it are pursuing Nephil bandits for miles around, but the last place their captain expected a battle was at his own doorstep. It is a dark, moonless night, but the torches on the walls provide more than enough light for the keen-eyed Nephilim. The guards on the walls never know what hits them, and the soldiers who rush to their aide fall shortly after; the Nephilim present no target to return fire on. The shouts of alarmed soldiers spread quickly through the barracks, spreading panic among the refugees from other Nephil raids. With barely a sound, the agile Nephilim throw grappling hooks and begin to scale the walls. In the courtyard, where a few of the more cool-headed residents are building a large fire. The lieutenant in command of the place is pulled suddenly from his sleep and rushes outside, only to be caught up in a general stampede toward the armory. They find it locked, the keys still under the lieutenant's pillow. By now, arrows are flying everywhere, killing the armed and unarmed indiscriminantly. In a few minutes, it's all over. The survivors are taken prisoner and made to haul wagons loaded with goods away into the mountains. Swords, chain mail, arrows of iron and steel, and a great store of provisions go north with the prisoners, while most of the attackers disperse silently into the woods to wait for any human soldiers who were away from the fort to return. Behind them, the place goes up in flames. * * * News of the battle takes a few days to reach Tevrono, but from their it speeds south quickly. It is the first time in living memory that Nephilim have attacked a military target, and the shock is considerable. Posts: 567 | Registered: Friday, October 5 2001 07:00 |

A well-concealed, black-robed human stands at an overly-cautious distance from the raid, thinking to himself. "Well. This is surprising... But if what Red said was true, then... No. I suppose I'll wait until they disperse. Can't be too cautious." One day later, when the stragglers are well and dead and the nephilim have abandoned the fort, a small cadre of black-robed men sneak in like vultures and leave the place corpse-free. A few moderate-sized crates of vittles arrive on Homurr's doorstep a day later. -------------------- 私のバラドですそしてころしたいいらればころす Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |
