Heya all,

I started playing BOA & have been thru all of the scenarios I can find - Loved them - some more than others; some moreso than others I must admit, But it was the diversity that thrilled me. I want to look at playing the other Spiderweb games (whilst building my own scenario) & I am wondering if there is a ""GURU"" that could point me in the right direction...???

Any help much appreciated.

No worries.

If you don't mind the Exile interface, BoE is absolutely the best choice. All the good stuff from BoA, but more of it. More scenarios, better scenarios, more diversity, etc.

As for the Jeff-made games, the best place to start would be by playing the demos, which are free. That way you can get a sense of what games you'd enjoy, because different things appeal to different people. Many people list Nethergate as one of their favourites, but it doesn't do much for me. I really enjoy Geneforge, some others don't. If you try the Exiles, keep in mind that there's a progression - the engine changes a bit from one version to the next.

If you're looking for something in particular, we're happy to help with that too.

Take a look at Avernum 3. Many feel this is Jeff's best game.

It might help to know which scenarios you liked the most and why.

Generally:

Exile trilogy vs. Avernum: same plot, different interface. The demos give you an idea of what they're like — if you tried Avernum first, you'll probably like it better.

However, if you find that you can handle the Exile engine, and if you liked BoA, you'll love BoE. Hundreds of scenarios, some larger than any of Jeff's games, have been made for BoE.

Avernum 1: If you want to play the series all the way through and start at the beginning, start here.

Avernum 2: Probably the best plot in the Trilogy, at least throughout the first part. Most Blades designers consider this the best of the Trilogy.

Avernum 3: The largest game Jeff has ever released, by a significant margin. If you want to play for ever and ever with a variety of different characters, monsters, and encounters, get this one.

Nethergate: My personal favorite, a lot like Avernum but with different spells and an older dialogue system. Get this one if you're willing to sacrifice length for plot coolness.

Geneforge 1-3: Really different from the Avernum stuff. Not recommended if you want something like BoA — but good in their own right.

And, as noted above, the demos give you a pretty good idea of what the full games are like — I can't think of any of the demos that are misleading in any way, except maybe BoE's, which sells the game a bit short.

Try Nethergate, I can hardly see anyone being disappointed.

And from what I hear, the Geneforge series hits off well with newcomers. You might consider that as well (but def. play demo first).

Yeah, just play the demos and make your decision from there. I enjoyed Nethergate the most, but its demo is unfortunately one of the worst of the bunch. Keep that in mind.

Well, I decided to download Exile & Nethergate.... Before I checked the responses on here - der - You were right about the different interface/engine - I dont really like it, I do think BOA is much easier to use, that maybe also because I am a newbie too.
However, there is a wider variety of scenarios... So maybe I will have another try, maybe.

Also in regards to the scenarios themselves - Bahssikava - Is my fav. story line great, PLUS it made you think! But I am currently replaying The Za-Khazi Run again, & I enjoy the "feel" of that.

Thanks for the """positive""" responses...

Yeah, the learning curve for the Exile series is almost a learning wall, but if you read and follow the tutorial in the manual, you'll catch on soon enough. It's well worth the effort.

Hmm. I'm thinking A3 is probably a good buy for you, but you might want to play the Trilogy from the beginning.

Well, there is no unambiguous favorite. Each has its own merits. Nethergate's only problem is that it is smaller than the others, but for what it does, it's quite good.

Now that you mention it... Making a proper introduction is the best way to take contact with people but this is fine too. If you have problems being new to this forum, just remind us about it. (Geez, I already sound like I am an oldie on this forum... )

Actually, "Hi, I'm new" posts tend to get annoying. Starting with something relevant or by asking a good question is usually preferred.
Also, morale actually has nothing to do with right or wrong. http://dictionary.reference.com/search?r=67&q=morale
Perhaps law instead?

Actually, think of what morale is. Law is based on the "right or wrong"-view of the bible (Or the current religions scripth.). Drinking yourself is moraly wrong meaning that it is something wrong so you shouldn't do that. I don't post things as that without giving it a decent think-through.

He wasn't saying that your idea was wrong, merely your word. "Morale" means "The state of the spirits of a person or group as exhibited by confidence, cheerfulness, discipline, and willingness to perform assigned tasks." The word you intended was "moral," without the E.

Nethergate is one of the most loved Spiderweb games, going by the general forum consensus. I don't enjoy it, is all. But then, you can't expect everybody to like any one thing.

I honestly don't see why people have such trouble with BoE's interface.

Out of interest, whereabouts in NSW are you? I'm in Canberra.

Kel needs to understand the definition of context before accepting complements.

Hmmm... Well there is a couple of responses here I just MUST Make. Please excuse length of post/

Re: "Newbie comment... " I shall explain why I even mentioned it, I have been looking for certain software/info "I am a researcher in my spare time" in the states & online medical journals etc... & they didnt really like to respond ESP. if you have only been a menber for less than 24 hrs... An assumption I made would be the same here, but was proved wrong - which I must say is a pleasent suprise :)

Adding to this - quoting a post I read "Hi, I'm new" posts tend to get annoying. Starting with something relevant or by asking a good question is usually preferred."
I thought that was what I did??? after all isnt this a site where you find out information & discuss topics game related or not ???

Or is that person someone that has a "gerbal" permanently stuffed up there rear ??? please explain...?

Re: "Interface...." I 'spose that I just prefer games/software where mouse clicks/time management are the central - work habits die hard, lol. But like I said, in regards to BOE maybe its worth the extra look...

Ohh & BTW I am on the North Coast NSW - North of Grafton.

Also, could the post ""Kel needs to understand the definition of context before accepting complements"" isnt that up the the viewer/player? Generally, & I mean generally - with these types of games... You have choice, its the players way of determining its integral interpretation of it; whether the designer ment it that way or not.

Just a last quick comment...

You are only as old as you feel... :D for all you oldies out there!
