Wait. If you were born in the Soviet Union, then lived in Ukraine, and now live in the US, how does that make you Russian?

Sorry for screwing up your identity. Feel free to call yourself Russian, I don't mind at all. :P

Well, if one were to consider Soviet equivalent to Russian, then the fact that he was born Soviet would mean that he was born Russian.

Ukrainians speak Russian, right? They're not like other ethnic groups formerly in the Soviet Union (like the Georgians, say) who are completely different from Russians, as I recall.

Ukrainian and Russian used to be the same language early in the last millenium and have since diverged. The Tsarist government were the last group who tried to deny this. Essentially Ukrainians are the descendants of the inhabitants of the southern principalities of Kievan Rus' and Russians are the descendants of those from the north.

The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics had a Russian Republic. If you were born in it, as Waffly was (although Dnepetrovsk, which originally became Russian because Moscow didn't trust the Ukrainians, is once again part of Ukraine) you'd be a Russian.

Is Ukranian really a dying language? I thought Russian was the minority language in Ukraine.

I speak Swedish but I certainly don't consider myself a Swede. :P

I don't know, I thought that was the funniest part of this discussion, but no one else seems to have noticed it.

It's funny the first 10 times you hear it. After that, the novelty fades.

Good job bringing the typo to our attention, though.

Every time you make a typo, God kills a kitten.

And every time you point one out, he kills another one.

Will nobody think of the poor kittens? :(

Look up "swede" in the dictionary. Not that the joke was a particularly funny one anyway.

Hey Waffly welcome! You've got a good reception, which is nice to see. Hope you stay and post and don't become like those leeches who post a little and then go away.

Has there been any talk about somehow resurrecting (if that's the right word) Ukranian as a language to substitute Russian? How different is one from the other? (I hesitate to bring this up but to any who may know: are they like say, for instance, portuguese and spanish?))

Excellent to have a member from Ukraine!!!

Well, hello Mr. Waffles. I may remember you, but then again, I can't remember what I had for breakfast yesterday.

In other news: Wooo! Welcome back BSC!
