|33t (although 1337) = leet = 'lite = elite
d00ds = doods = dudes

1337 5P33K = Stupod.

It's a trend that, indeed (contrary to what some might say) started in the FPS game Counter-Strike a good many years ago. It was actually cool then, but now it's just annoying.

It's important to note that hackers and pirates started using it, and still do. That's why they'll forever be lame, stupid people.

\/\/|-|^/? I find it very annoying as well, but it an interesting way of typing. I wonder if the real reason why the characters are shaped the way they are is because of l33t. And before anyone says CS, it started out as a way for hackers to add a small further level of encryption into their communication. Not professionally, though.

As much as I'd like to agrue, I will not. It started in CS, though I'll settle on HLDM. Hackers were second. It's been proven.

And the original texts only included letters, numbers, and a few basic characters. No one ever typed "\/\/ |-| ^/?". That's even further ridiculous.

I'd consider this as encrypting as the others. :P At least I could figure out that the second work was dudes. The first one had be baffled, too.

You blathering cretin. Shut your fat face and stop big-noting your knowledge in areas you don't know the first damn thing about. Observe:

http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/H/hakspek.html

quote:
hakspek: /hak´speek/, n.

A shorthand method of spelling found on many British academic bulletin boards and talker systems. Syllables and whole words in a sentence are replaced by single ASCII characters the names of which are phonetically similar or equivalent, while multiple letters are usually dropped. Hence, ?for’ becomes ?4’; ?two’, ?too’, and ?to’ become ?2’; ?ck’ becomes ?k’. “Before I see you tomorrow” becomes “b4 i c u 2moro”. First appeared in London about 1986

Sadly I'm neither fat nor do I lack knowledge in this area. But like I said, I won't argue. If you want to believe that, then go ahead.

Edit: What the... Thuryl you idiot. This topic is about 1337 d00ds, not short-hand internet writing. I am right after all. Also it should be known it's official (well as far as that goes) name is indeed, "1337-sp34k".

Don't try and cover up an obvious if arrogant slip of knowledge with philandering. It's really, really uncouth.

As for 1337speek? It's better than a decade old, albeit in a form you wouldn't recognize; witness B1FF, a proto-Jeff-K figure. And JeffK himself, who was born before CS (if memory serves) and certainly 1337spoke.

I hate that. Using numbers instead of letters is just retarded. I can't stand shorthand either...whatever it may have been before, now it's just a way for illiterate 12-year-olds to infect the internet with their inane discussions. And that stupid \/\/ text is so freaking annoying. Why the heck would anyone type something that way? It takes twice as long if not more, and it's really hard to read!

In case you ever need to communicate with one of the aforementioned illiterate 12-year-olds, this may come in handy: Script/AOLer Translator

And here, the original (I think) version of the translator.

Also, 1337speak is just stupid. Shorthand is actually useful when playing various games (mostly FPSs.. a coincidence? No.), because you just don't have time to write like you normally would and could.
