Hi there,

It has come to my attention that there are some problems with various art
pieces for the game Leylines.
(for more information read these threads:)
http://www.ironycentral.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=001236

http://www.ironycentral.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=001203

(edit: oops!!! fixed the urls I screwed up)
(edit again: what the flip? it replaces slash url by slash ur space l ???)
(ah, that's better)

Anyway. I'll post a bunch of links to fantasy pictures here that were inteded
to be used in the game. I would appreciate your feedback on this; if you think
any image is inappropriate, offensive, tasteless or just plain low quality,
please tell me. Please use the numbering for easy reference.

I cannot promise that I can actually alleviate the problem as my access to art
is limited, but I'll try. Please do NOT post suggestions for alternate
artwork, as there is usually strict copyright involved and I cannot just
use roughly 95% of the art found on the internet.
Thank you for your time.

(edit) Those new to this topic, please realize there are more images
noted below in my other posts. Thank you. (/edit)

2 is the only one which may be a problem to the overly sensitive. The rest are fine.

Those women on pic two are wearing so little that I wonder why they even bother.

The Mystery Woman is still the best, though No.9 has an expressive face and No.10 could be good, if the face was less insignificant. I understand your problem better now. It is difficult to find something that is vibrating and alive. No.9 comes closest in my opinion.

No. 2 is pretty tasteless, and would almost definitely offend most parents. The rest are fine though.

#2 is not even appealing as art. I'd rather not have it in a game even if it wouldn't offend anyone.

—Alorael, who doesn't have any other complains, besides the obscene loading time on some of those images. Many of them are very good, especially considering that they're free.

Point: You had a screenshot where 1 is used as a fullscreen background-since it is not the shape of the average monitor, maybe it could either be trimmed, or displayed in only the centre of the screen, or something?

Other than that...well, I've made my opinions known on the women-wearing-next-to-nothing pictures. I really just don't see what they contribute to the game, and can guarantee that if my parents found me playing a game where one of those pictures pops up regularly, it wouldn't remain installed long...I don't know how many people this is true for, but certainly a not insignificant minority. I appreciate the fact that you may not be able to easily get hold of others, though...

Indeed, #2 is pushing it much too far. I'm sure there are gazillions of other pictures showing hordes of less-scantily clad women ready for battle. Or, just any picture of a massed army would do, in my humble little opinion in this corner of the galaxy.

Everybody seems to like the mystery woman (called Ekanda) except that she's
pushing things a bit. I've cut the graphic off roughly at the navel, I
believe that makes it more acceptable, what do you think?

#2 will be dropped and replaced.
#6 is under consideration since it could really use a background instead of
just smoke.

Omelette -> Yes, #1 is trimmed and cropped a bit. It does show but not to a
point where it really bothers me.

Imban -> Apologies for my lack of knowledge of slang IMAGE(Fantasy art survey_files/smile.gif) anyway if a picture
'owns' I assume that is a good thing?
#7 is, well, evil. That's the whole point IMAGE(Fantasy art survey_files/smile.gif) I do not believe it tasteless
but that's my opinion, any thoughts? After all she is cutting herself.

Thanks everybody for your feedback! Here are some more potential images.

I'd steer clear of 18. Real-world religious symbolism is not something you want in a fantasy game. Most people won't care, but some will be even more offended by a cross than by nudity.

—Alorael, who doesn't like any of the three character pictures that much, although he doesn't hate them either. The other graphics are all good artistically, even 18.

15-18 and 21 don't load for me.

11-14 are all cool, although I feel that maybe you could put something else on the main menu (currently 12, for people who don't know)...I feel a battle scene would be better, since magic, especially out-of-battle magic, is a relatively minor part of the game (unless the beta is a lot different from the actual game...).

I like 20, but in 19 I think the b/w enlargement in the background detracts from the picture rather than adding to it (and is somewhat out of place if no other character has a similar background...)

From the menue screens it is 11) and 13) I like most. As a character I like 19). I find none objectionable, though Alorael may have a point. No.20/21 are a bit dull for a character, but on the whole I think them all ok.

The best character you have is Mystery. Now if the fog that surrounds her could be drawn more into the lower part of the figure she would be less provocative. Do you think the author would permit that?

I think a bit of editing with Mysterious (Mystery?) would work very well. I played with her a bit on photo brush. Used the rubber stamp feature to move a bit of a foggy haze.

I would hate to see her cut the art is really nice on that one. I don't have a clue how to post it here so I'm emailing the edited version to Radiant.

#2 was not so great. The rest are between okay and good. I don't think many will upset even the parents.

Edit: Correct name for Mystery?

Alorael -> Interesting point.
Originally the game was intended to have a fantasy-based pantheon
where you could pick a god to worship and gain certain bonuses
(god of war = attack bonus, god of nature = bigger cities, etc).
This was dropped because we couldn't get it completed on any decent
timescale. Unfortunately. The picture referred to was the background for that
so it won't be used anyways.

Omlette -> No, actually magic is a very important part of the game. There are
over fifty different spells that can be used to enhance your units, cripple
your opponents and mess with the map. In most good strategies we're casting
spells all the time. Of course this isn't apparent in the current
web-version and our internal version is still too buggy to put on the web.

I agree with you on 19; I'm actually using only the right half of the picture
inside the game so the grayish thing won't show.

As to Ekanda (the mystery woman).
Devlish made the following solution by editing slightly:
http://www.liacs.nl/~psimoons/Ekanda1.jpg

Myself I've made the following solution by cutting off the bottom:
http://www.liacs.nl/~psimoons/Ekanda2.jpg
Let me know what you think please.

Thanks for everybody's input, I'll post the other half of the graphics next
week.

Uh, I can't see any difference at all between Devlish's version and the origional. Granted my monitor is mucked up atm due to some rubbishy game changing my palette only when opened, or similar, but I can't see any difference at all. If there is some, it needs to be more changed...maybe completely obscuring the lower half of the image with mist, which wouldn't make it look any less artistic. The cropped image doesn't look right, I don't know why...I think it's the exact point it's cropped at, images with sides in whole-number proportions generally work better. (ie, square ones or ~2:1. Mind you, this is just my personal theory...)

I used the mist to obscure most of the features that were showing below the bikini line such as a darkening to suggest pubic hair. I could 1/2 cover the gem like I have done with her lower anatomy but I think the gem is too much part of her outfit. (the rings, the gleam on the finger tips, etc)

It was not a radical alteration. Just a way to tone it down a bit. Other than the breasts, I see teenage girls showing off almost as much flesh as this does from the top of the bikini upwards (v-neck crop tops & hip hugger jeans) at my sons high school.

Perhaps a bit more fog tight in above the bikini bottom might help a bit or a curl of fog to disguise the cleavage. Its not hard to move over. Clone brush, minimal opacity(sp?).

Edit: more spelling errors

Omlette -> the image is resized in-game anyways. So are most of them.

I'm not sure what to do with Ekanda. For the time being, she's dropped
from the game. Reason being, most people seem to like Devlish's solution
but I'm not actually allowed to do that to artwork.

Here are some more images, set three. Comments welcome.

28 looks odd...I don't know exactly why, although I'm sure the woman ought to be larger relative to the horse...and the horse seems unhealthily fat, too...and the horse in 31 looks wrong too, although I'm not sure why I say that...

28 has bizarre textures and light effects where there shouldn't be any, giving it a blurry appearance. The proportions are off as well.

—Alorael, who likes the other Poser-made ones. The two Isauras images don't quite look right, although he can't put his finger on why.

36 and 38 look more artificial than the others. 38 especially looks like something made out of children's play-bricks rather than a real building.

47 and 49 look too cartoony, if you follow me.

41 has got to be my favourite so far...
