I highly, highly recommend playing the whole series in order. They each stand alone, yet if you play them all you get to see the whole history, to watch the power of the Geneforge spread like a virus. Some folks have their favorites...I personally like GF4 the best, but that's coming from a guy who played and enjoyed them all. GF4 may be the culmination, but I recommend playing them all in order to get maximum enjoyment. So, really, begin with GF1. Posts: 10 | Registered: Wednesday, November 1 2006 08:00 |

I felt that the political metaphor was most fully developed in GF4, where the rebelling faction has gained access to doomsday devices, and the faction in power has a totalitarian control over the general population. A handful of people with great power and other groups trying to claim some of that power....Substitute nuclear weapons, chemical weapons, germ warfare, and suddenly Geneforge becomes an allegory about our own time. What's awesome about GF4 is that I played through as a Rebel and a (traitor) Loyalist before I realized that you could pursue the path of disarmament, through the Trakovites. If there is a GF5, I hope that the Trakovites play a major role. Posts: 10 | Registered: Wednesday, November 1 2006 08:00 |

The walkthrough references a Capture Soul spell. I've found Simulacrum, but no sign of Capture Soul...does it exist in Nethergate? Posts: 10 | Registered: Wednesday, November 1 2006 08:00 |

I'm playing through for the second time, this time as the Romans, and I'm not clear on how to get all the Sylak keys. I've read the walkthru and it seems that the only way to get key 5 is by befriending the selkies...but I intend to kill them. Is there a way around this problem without my party dishonoring themselves? Posts: 10 | Registered: Wednesday, November 1 2006 08:00 |

If we're going to be totally realistic about it, javelins should do *way* more damage than slings. Sure, a sling stone is travelling at high speed due to being wound up...but a javelin is basically a dude hucking an enormous freaking dart at you. You don't wanna get hit by a flying rock...but you *really* don't wanna get hit by a javelin. Posts: 10 | Registered: Wednesday, November 1 2006 08:00 |

Thank you all for your input. It looks like the consensus is that I have to hold out for level 3 magic shaping. Thanks! Posts: 10 | Registered: Wednesday, November 1 2006 08:00 |

I am playing Geneforge 1, and I just got my 3rd canister of Create Artila. Now, Searing Artila appears on my creations list but it's greyed out. I have enough essence, so that's not the problem. Even if I absorb all my creations, it's still not an optoin. Is it a question of my shaping skill level? (it's a 2 right now) I searched the forums and FAQ but so far haven't been able to figure it out. Posts: 10 | Registered: Wednesday, November 1 2006 08:00 |

Has anyone here ever read Matt Ridley's "Origins of Virtue" ? Ridley's a biologist...I don't agree with everything he has to say but he basically asserts that cooperation is a great survival strategy. So, as far as humans go, cooperation is the essence of "good," while selfishness is the essence of "evil." The reason is that we humans are social animals, and although we often seek personal advantage, the vast part of our lives/societies/personalities are based on cooperation. You get more out of helping your neighbor (gratitude, status, reciprocation) than you do out of hurting him (hatred, fistfights, prison). Even if you personally profit, helping others is basically good, isn't it? By these lights, I'd argue that most humans are basically good, since we live in huge cooperative societies. It's just more profitable. ps: i luv u all Posts: 10 | Registered: Wednesday, November 1 2006 08:00 |

I'm working on the Giants/Troglodytes quest and I cannot seem to find the entrance to the concealed barrier tunnel. I've retrieved the map and examined it; it seems to indicate an area that I've already visited (I had to use the Orb of Thralni to get up there.) There was a buried treasure and nothing else. The walkthrough indicates that once I've examined the map, I should see a dungeon entrance. Unfortunately, I don't see one. I'm right in between Castle Troglo and the Giant's Home. Is there someone I'm supposed to talk to, or something I'm supposed to do? Please advise! Posts: 10 | Registered: Wednesday, November 1 2006 08:00 |
