If you limit avatar size, then they don't cause that much of a bandwidth issue.

They already know about it. They haven't shut it down because they either aren't doing anything illegal, have bigger fish to fry or can't locate where that website is hosted from. Like, they knew about all those kiddie pr0n sites long before that Candyman bust lasy year (or was it the year ebfore that?) but they couldn't shut them down until they had both located those who ran them and built their case against them.

Sharewear can be broken quite easily, source code or not. If you look around on the internet, you'll find all sort of cracks of any sharewear game imagineable. Crackers found out how to break the password system long ago.

Exile or Avernum? in General

Well, it depends on what you like.

The Exile series is really true to the good ol' P&P RPG style. Except for the lack of personal contact with real live nerds, playing Exile is a lot like a good game of D&D. You're given a lot of freedom, such as in character creation (play with 1-6 PCs) character development (more PCs means more specialization) and dialog (keywords, not "pick a number.") The graphics also lend it some character, and though some may not like it, the retro style really appeals to me (and a few others I'm sure.)

Avernum is a computer game through and through. It's more polished, it runs smoother, it's got entirely different dialog and magic systems. The graphics are more complex than in Exile, but that really shouldn't be the big thing. Basically, it will come down to whether you want an experiance that's closer to an old-school P&P RPG or a contemporary PC RPG.

Either one's a good choice.

Well, open source programs are usually free, but not always. It's not necessary, if it is traditional. Technically, anything is open source if it comes with the source code bare and open to easy editing for all. However, since the Open Source movement and the freeware movement are closely tied, they usually get associated with each other.

Here's the Wikipedia entry on open source, which explains it fairly well: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_source

Still, it's possible that your assertion is correct, though I'm not quite sure what the purpose would be.

When you say you're thinking of releasing it open source, I assume you simply mean you're going to ship it with the source code, not that you're gonna give it away for free, correct?
