Which operating system are you using since Windows and Mac store the information in different folders?

A saved game folder that hasn't had a game stored in it still has placeholding files. Checking creation dates is a quick way to spot files.

Try searching for the files: "Start->Search->For Files or Folders...", and then type the exact name of one saved game, .sav extension included.

I think Jeff's latest games usually save the games in My Documents, but I guess they could have been accidentally misplaced somewhere else.

On the Mac they are stored in folders called "Save0" through "Save19" with individual files called things like "data", "header", "items" and "journal".

These files reside in the "Avernum 4 Files" folder which is in the same place as the application.

Maybe that will help you with tracking it down on "the other platform".

Windows version should have them in My Documents. It should be fairly obvious as a named folder with Avernum 4 and the 20 save folders inside it. The only other spot is with the application.

And in each folder the file is named temp and is 4 bytes. Those are in the installation folder... Am i missing something?

Have you saved games within the game that work properly?

Yes. My save file is named Nash. I tried running a search for it ... no resuslt.

Hmm well the only other thing i could think of is hidden file... But thats not that, so ...

Are YOUR save file effectively in the Data folder in the save01-save19 folder?

The name you save under in game doesn't show up in the file name of the save game. All saved games are named sav0 to sav19 with sav19 being autosave and sav18 being quick save. The first in game save slot correspond to sav0 and so forth.

So look at the save file that corresponds to the position that you saved under. If you have only one saved game then the others will be the installation created temp files.

I've deleted all sav folder on both my computer. I even did a search to check if it was saved elsewhere. I still can load my saved game...

All my sav folder all had the temp file in it. Is there a other way the game save the progress?

Do you have windows vista? Vista thinks savegames in the installation directory are unsanitary, so it smoothly puts the files somewhere else. I dunno where. Haven't tried vista myself.

Doesn't apply if you used a different install directory.

Well, I installed A4 just to check the mysterious save game problem. I'm a Vista x64 user, and installed the game in the default folder.

After starting the game, I saved the game in the first available slot, and quit. After some searching, the saved game was found in "c:\program files (x86)\avernum 4\data\save0\", so the obvious folder. Since your folders were empty, the only guess I have is that you've installed the game twice. Are you running the game from the start menu, and if so, have you verified that it is in fact running the game from the directory that has the empty save folders?

Like I said, everything worked fine with me, so if the above doesn't help, then I'm all out of ideas.

I tried it on a win xp (prof.) machine.
It works as it should. Saved games are in
INSTALLATIONPATH/data/sav0 to sav19.

Maybe you should check where the softlink for
Avernum4 is pointing to.

p.s.: Even uninstalling keeps the used
sav-folders and preferences.

Ok I solve the mystery of the lost save games files!!!!!

My system is Vista 32bit.

The saved game files for an unkown reason is at:
C:\Users\<User name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Avernum 4\Data

The folder "AppData" is hidden.
