This isn't much of a help topic, but I noticed that Avernum 4 uses Geneforge graphics, and from what I read, allows cheats from the Geneforge games. Now, i haven't played it yet, and probably won't unless I have time and am bored out of my mind, but I'm just wondering what people think of this. I think that reusing graphics from another game makes you seem lazy, and it doesn't go along with the other games in the series, but that's just my view. What does everyone else think?

Dikiyoba thinks you should use the search button, as much as Dikiyoba hates the search button. Or at least just browse through promising looking topics like "Changes for Better or Worse" and "Rate Avernum 4" rather than asking people to repeat themselves.

This has been discussed in great detail before...

It does use a modified Geneforge engine, so the cheats are the same; I don't see this as a lack of originality, though. They're not a major part of the game.

It reuses a lot of Geneforge graphics because it uses the new engine (whether that's a good idea is another question), and those graphics take some time to make. They were working on graphics all the way to the release, even without remaking everything. Some of the graphics work well, too, though I admit it's a bit weird to see some things appear in Avernum.

Laziness can be an economically sound tactic: if you want an acid-spitting worm in your game, you might as well use a graphic you already have, rather than remaking it completely, right?

Overall, I don't care that much about graphics. It looks reasonable pretty, though elevation would be nice, so I'm happy enough.

But that would defeat the whole point!

If you look at the description for the luck skill, you can see it is reused text from Avernum 3 with its "this skill has a base level of 0" despite that being true for all skills in Avernum 4. Many items have reused descriptions as well. Also, though some of the graphics originated in Geneforge, many graphics in Geneforge originated in Avernum, and even a few item graphics first appeared in Nethergate.

I guess Jeff figures if a graphic works for a given purpose he doesn't necessarily need to make a new one just because its a new game.
