Guys,

I've been looking for a way to get certain npcs to join the party (if the party has a free slot). It's kinda like those people in A2 who join (Becca or something). My only problem is - I don't see it in the documents. Is this capability even in BoA?

Thanks,

- Archmagus Micael

yes, it can be done, you just didn't look closely enough in the docs. Look in "NPC's joining party calls."

Adobe claims npcs don't exist anywhere in either of the docs.

I'll redownlad the docs and see if they have it. Perhaps my verion got corrupted somehow.

You can also check out Sweetgrove's scripts in the Valley of Dying Things; look for Bruning.

I always had the impression that you could have a creature follow the party around, assist the party, even be considered part of the party - with one important difference - unlike in Nethergate, a fifth or sixth 'PC' cannot be improved.

Essentially, they are a monster that follows the party, nothing less, nothing more. To actually join the party, be considered part of it, be ressurectable, gain experience, etc. - I think that this is beyond the current engine.

CPeters brings up an important point, which I'll summarize (to make sure it's clear): you can't have a PC behave exactly like Becca in A2. A BoA "joined NPC" is not like an AT "joined NPC."

But if you want a BoA-style joined NPC, follow the instructions as above.

Ah,

Okay. That clears a few things up. One other thing though: will this NPC stay with the party in Outdoor combat, or will it just simply fail to appear?

It will appear everywhere (unless its dead) and help the party with fighting. Also in the outdoors. However, i'm not sure if you can control it like becca in Av 2. i think the computer simply controls it.

The computer has total control of the NPC... so script them well.

Unfortunately, NPC scripts are pretty dumb...I believe they fall back to basicnpc behavior except for DEAD_STATE and a few others.

If you have the patience to set all of the statistics and skills for a character through scripting calls, then it is completely possible to mimic the NPCs that become a controllable part of the party like in A1 and A2.

Similarly, there can still only be 4 party members, so a full party would have to give up a member to gain the NPC.

You'd have to do some odd things for that to work, though. There's no way to create a new character out of a blank (deleted) party slot, as far as I know. You'd need to mutate one of the party's characters and just instruct the player to change the character's name and graphic.
