i havnt played boe myself, so i dont know if there is a story line to scenario editors. If not, i know it would b a long way away, but i am so caught up in the avernum trilogy that i would really like to see another sequal. I know this topic will b a contraversial one, but what do u reckon, why and why not? :)

There will be no Avernum 4. In Blades of Exile, At the Gallows serves as an Exile IV, but it will most likely remain on the Exile side. Blades of Avernum will allow the user to create scenarios, and there will be some that are large enough and good enough to be an Avernum 4.

There won't be any avernum 4 per se, but as was just said, there are/were/will be some really long scenarios. Also, each of the 3 (supposed to be 4 in BoA) bundled scenarios has a fairly long and detailed storyline. Well, at least Valley and Rebellion do :P

Most scenarios made will really be an A4, as most are based on the Avernum world (well, its like that with BoE). They'll probably mostly be shorter than the series, but it'll be like having hundreds (well, lots) of Avernum 4s

If somebody was to create a scenario which was, for all intents and purposes, Avernum 4 it would be great. However, it would require someone both competent with the editor and someone who could write a good story, like Stareye did with AtG.

Also, it would have to be an extension of the basic avernum plotline. It is avernum 4, after all.

Well, nobody says you have to play it.
Anyway, of coure there will be many new scenarios, mostly of high quality. Don't worry, I'm sure it will be good.

The registered version of BoA will come with four scenarios, probably the three from BoE remade and one new one.

If you don't want to replay the ones from BoE, then don't; nobody is forcing you to. Just wait until some completely original scenarios are made for BoA and have fun with those.

—Alorael, who agrees that the Spiderweb scenarios were quite enough once. Only A Mild Rebellion is any good, and playing through twice gives both sides. After that, they're far less interesting than other scenarios.

I don't know, valley was good once through. Anyway, I wouldn't mind seeing some of the really good old scenarios ported, e.g. Tatterdemalion, the spheres series, etc. I recall a post on the BoE forum about 'scenarios to keep for the ages'.

Tatter's author is long gone, and porting any scenario with custom graphics will take a long, long time.

True enough. Still, I think in general that, if the designers are still here, it would be nice to port over some of the real classics.

Probably around half of the custom graphics used in BoE could be represented by standard graphics. Then there are other custom graphics which probably wouldn't have to be custom at all, due to the way the graphics 'squares' work in Avernum (ie. noone will have to make teleporter on grass graphics or those type of things).
Then, for the rest of the custom graphics, (like the Avions in Tat., seeing as it has been mentioned) it probably wouldn't take too long to make some.
The biggest problem I see with porting is how well nodes will translate into the new scripting system, particularly complicated sequences.

It would be possible for someone to port scenarios if the author has dissapeared wouldn't it?

It depends on how the porting system works, but I think that anything without a password will be convertible (although knowing exactly how the scenario was programmed would help). If Jeff doesn't include a password prompt, then it should be possible to convert everything.

—Alorael, who would rather see new scenarios than remade classics. The porting system will also probably mangle a lot of scenarios unless a lot of time is spent correcting all the details. With that sort of effort, a whole new scenario could be created.

Well I'm just sayin I'd rather have whole new experiences and challenges right out of the box (er... download). I'd still play them to get the skills for my characters, but playing something you already know how to conquer isn't always the funnest game. And yes I know people will be making new scenarios but as I did with BOE, I swore to myself that I wouldn't play any custom things until I beat all the original ones. That ended up taking way too much time... and I played some anyway. Stupid me... I need a potion of +5 Anti-CustomQuests...
