I know this is gonna make me sound like a complete Moron, but.....how do you start playing the actual scenario? I*'m just stuck at the campfire waiting for the moron captain to return. Help?

It comes with a pre-made party feature. Basically, you enter with a brand-new singleton party and use the pre-made party ability in the special abilities menu once the scenario starts.

Otherwise start with a single character of at least 15th level and preferably higher. No spell casting allowed.

This is why the pre-fab is recommended.
