"Diplomacy With the Dead, you have to help a remote city deal with the powerful vampire who lives just outside town. This turns out to be much more complicated than it sounds. "

I guess I have to say : discuss.

Sounds EXACTLY like a BOE scenario I did once, minus the vampire. Of course I won't blame for stealing ideas, since how many people played it? 2? (Entitled: Dead Men Walking, look to see if anyone uploaded it)

It was actually fun, and I won't normally say that about my own scenarios. It'll be interesting to see the possible endings for this one, so I'd give this a pre-emptive 8/10. When BOA is released head to my site for a full review, of course! [end selfish advertisement]

Yeah, it tends to remind me of the "Burned to Ashes" scenario, I think.

That might be the wrong one.

Do we know the difficulty that we're talking about?

(I'm guessing it's either Very High, as in after Za-Khazi, or Med-High, as in vampire fighting)

"Oh, North Wind, why frighten others?
In Nature's family all are brothers.
Puff and blow and wheeze and hiss;
You can't frighten Shingebiss.
Bring your frost and ice and snow;
I'm still free to come and go.
You can never frighten me,
One who never fears is FREE!"

I remember playing a similar scenario with a rouge vamp. and although the idea is a good one it has been played out to no end. In any case real plot and enourmous depth are needed to pull it off.

I hope Jeff will put a lot of work into the last scenario since it probably will only take him a few days to convert and improve on the other 3. I want to see a really well designed scenario to come with the game. Then people could be convinced that they could make something as good, and even better.

It takes an hour to convert each town and outdoor section. Not to mention the dialogue.

You mean it will take him about a day to convert each scenario? I think there must be a more efficient way of doing that... Do you know if the converter attempts to condense many nodes together or if it just makes inefficient scripted versions of nodes? The dialogue would be inherently difficult I guess.

Actually, more like weeks. There are many inherent differences in the engines that need to be checked and ironed out. The dialogue needs to be completely rewritten, for instance. Terrain has to be smoothed out to account for the differences in walls. Certain nodes no longer exist and need to have their own scripts attached. This and among other improvements to provide plenty of examples for how to do lots of things with the editor add up to lots of time per scenario.

It is not just like plugging something in, porting it, and just having it work. There needs to be a lot of revisions that a computer cannot do because of the differences in the two engines.

I am torn.

On one hand, an all-new scenario is very exciting.

On the other, does this mean that Bandit Busywork is dead and buried? And will never see the light of BoA? I had anticipated it being the fourth scenario.

:( and ;)

Bandit Busywork was indeed... yea... but I think we would all be happy with it just retiring. But someone will undoubtedly make something very similar.

As for the new scenario, we can only hope it will be as good as our hopes are. I believe the problem with the original three was that they were the original. Jeff was working with new technology, and really didn't know what his engine was capable of. I'm sure he'll be doing a lot more testing and experimentation with BOA, so we can only expect top notch. If not, don't worry about it. There'll be plenty of high quality user made scenarios.

But we can always port it to BoA and within seconds, Bandit Busywork will be reborn. And all shall cower as this evil is once again thrust upon this world, now twisted by the dark arts of the porting tool. Mwa, ha, ha!!

I personally liked Bandit Busywork, although it could have been done a bit better. You know, like randomly choosing one of the suspects at the beginning, and changing the scenario a little to go along with each suspect. But other than that, it was kind of fun. If he doesn't port it, I will.

Don't port Bandit Busywork. It's not your right to do so.

I don't think the BoE scenarios were very good, actually. Each one didn't have their own unified feeling. Jeff just didn't make each look like he put a lot of effort into making them, although he probably did. But the new scripts, refined dialogue, and the whole engine change will hopefully make these things better.

I don't think it's even smart to spend time porting Bandit Busywork. Surely you could be making some other masterpiece.

This probably belongs somewhere else, but oh well: What do we all think about mysteries? As in a scenario with next to no combat, just adventuring and puzzle solving? All thoughts are welcome.

Eh. I probably won't port it, but it was just a thought.
By the way, it was TM who gave me the idea of randomly choosing a number at the beginning and changing the scenario.
Scenarios with no combat and a lot of puzzles do work, if they are done well. But puzzles involving information that only three people and a canary know do not work well.
I was going to go into a big long rant about how BoE designers take the easy way out and don't put in any combat because it's too hard to make it fun, but then I realized I already made that rant in another topic.

A non-combat scenario does sound interesting, but I'm a little ambivalent as well. It would have to be exceptionally well done to be worthwhile, with a tightly written plot and engaging environment. It's not enough to simply include a series of ad-hoc riddles and frustrating lever puzzles in order for it to be true to the idea of non-combat. These puzzle elements are beyond tired. A project like this would require a great deal of excellent writing, and that's a trait I haven't seen in too many scenarios.

Johnny Favourite is a scenario with no combat and no puzzles. Whether it counts as a good scenario is a matter of opinion.

I would suggest Election as a scenario for one with minimal combat.

Election deserves a BOO.
Jonny, on the other hand, was good and fun to play.

On the thing with selecting a random suspect and having the storyline follows that for a Bandit Busywork mod, I suggest you check out Kallaskagathos (sp?) by Alcritas.
