Will combat in the BoA scenarios be like in A2, where it's only the weapon and strength that determines how much damage you can do; or will it be like A3, where both the appropriate weapons' skill and strength matters?

If it's like A3 then Hardiness will become useless pretty darn quick!

I guess BoA will be most like Avernum 3, but I wouldn't know...

I believe Jeff has already said somewhere that the engine, including the combat, is the same as A3.

—Alorael, who also expects that several designers will tweak numbers in order to get the damage levels back down to levels that aren't made meaningless by the cap.

I believe that you fouled up, Karzoth.

In any case, I think they'll use the A3 system.

Perhaps the damage caps can be lifted for BoA. If the testers push hard enough, then it can probably be done, if it is not too difficult.

Not only a triple-post, but I recall Alorael being protective of the "signature" signoff. Methinks I'll grab a bowl of popcorn and click on this topic for the next 48 hours for updates...

Don't steal my signature, especially if you're going to involve it in triple posting. Such activity is not appreciated, and future transgressions will be dealt with harshly.

—Alorael, who just couldn't disappoint his fan club. Now back on topic!

What the! Firstly, it was merely a joke to get my point across. And how the hell did that triple post? When I originally posted it, there was only one. That is completly not right...

I'm not "stealing" your signature either. Damn I only used it once, kiddingly to boot. And to think you people thought I MEANT to triple post. No need for hostility.

I'm not angry at all! I just can't let my adoring followers down by not giving the standard angry threats. Don't take it personally.

—Alorael, who will quietly apologize for the inconvenience. Very quietly, though, or his fans will be upset again, and nobody wants that.

Was that Yoda, or the google auto translator? Their results are usually very similar...

How am I weird? I get yelled at for stuff I didn't mean to do, and then get called weird for it. This world is coming to an end.

And while we're correcting eachother... Yoda doesn't just switch words around at random. What he says actually fits, if not grammatically correct, and makes sense. Jumbling words in random order can't be classified as 'Yoda'. And we need to get back on topic...

Never-the-less, combat will be tweaked by designers more than likely, so it's safe to say we don't know how it will be.

Alorael didn't yell at you seriously, though, and you made a big deal of it.

Anyway, combat can be much more interesting in BoA, especially since monsters can cast certain spells and target certain party members.

Too bad, we're back on topic. Otherwise I'd have said that there was actually structure in the jumble, the verb was always at the end, which is afaik typical for Yoda-speak.

Now let's get back on topic (once again).

If monsters will cast certain spells according to script, can you make them heal themselves if and only if they get below a certain health level, do you think?

Hmm... I don't feel as if I made a big deal. I don't know any of you, therefore you all mean nothing to me. Sorry if it came off a "big-deal". And does anyone care to explain to me how triple posting works, considering I only pressed ADD REPLY once?

(On topic) I'm sure if that would be entirely useful, considering that you normally either beat the crap out of him or barely do anything with the first hit. I suppose this would have room for say a boss, but otherwise it's just not worth going through the programming trials it would take. Just make him heal himself when he feels he needs to, a default reaction I believe.

Scripts can be shared by different monsters though, I hope, can they?

Will every individual monster you place have its script or will each monster type have a generic one?

As I understand it: when you make a new monster, you can apply a script to it. Then, every time you plant that monster, it has that script. If you wanted to have the same (pretty much) monster, but a different script, you would make a new monster, but make it almost identical to the first one. That's one thought.

The other is that you have monsters, then you right-click or something on them and bring up an info screen of just that monster. There you would be able to change it's simple stuff, and also apply scripts to that specific monster.

These are my ideas on how the scripting of monsters will work, but they are probably wrong. Maybe Jeff can tell us?

I believe it will also be possible to give individual monsters special AI and scripts. But I'd say that combat is always boring. The fun is in figuring out the tactics to use and being right (or horribly wrong).

—Alorael, who expects lots of tactical fun from BoA. He still wants an amazing gauntlet of Dark Wyrms on raised platforms. And intelligent spellcasters will be terrifying.
