The mod alert button is not there, and since tomorrow it has never existed anyway. Until further notice, let your favorite mod or admin know when a thread has gone terribly awry by email. Instant message works too, although we make no guarantees about instantaneity. Call by phone if you have a number. Even regular mail with paper and mailmen (who may bear some resemblance to someone) is fine if you're not in much of a hurry. Showing up in person to let the mod or admin know may or may not be appreciated depending on who you are, who they are, and whether or not you are armed. Faxes are much better. Smoke signals are probably sub-optimal. —Alorael, who is willing to evaluate other media for communicating dangerous posts on a case by case basis. Quick note. This is suboptimal as well, unless your objective was to have an angry mod come after you with a shotgun. That extends to other mods, too. *glares at Alorael* Edit: Minus the shotgun. Because sniping Alorael would be like spamming Scott Richter. But... I wanted an angry mod after me with a shotgun! —Alorael, who also has to deliver an official warning against double posting. That is not acceptable on Spiderweb. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Because pressing it repeatedly does something equivalent to the code snippet above, and someone did so on one of the Geneforge board. He is lucky. The real reason is, of course, that undo alarm over posts causes indigestion, and none of us indigestion. The alert button was really only rarely used, and when it was used it was generally unnecessary. When it was necessary it was usually used to the point of spam, as Aran says. —Alorael, who thinks a good addendum is that alerting people is only necessary in the case of extremely and immediately horrifying or illegal content. The mods do read the boards regularly and will probably notice anything that's just, say, OM being OM. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

Is vanilla style? I had a dream sometime ago where I posted a topic in General which said: 'Vanilla. I like vanilla.' and then I got banned for 3 months because of that. It was kind of an annoying dream. I mean, come on, three months for vanilla? Talk about unfair. The banned forum did have some lousy quests to do meanwhile, but apparently they were all boring and I didn't bother to finish them. Couldn't even switch to my #1000 account, because the main page would just throw me onto some fake Desperance site (it was much too pretty and polite to be the real thing). Okay, so I just wanted to tell that finally, and it sort of can fit. If you squint and look at it from the side. ^^ -------------------- "I'm not crazy!" "Well, whatever. I was going to say TM being TM, but TM's posts were generally overlooked by moderators and he's no longer around to be an example. Probably because of poor engineering. The border needs more bandwidth. —Alorael, who is sure someone can beat the outdated 1,951 miles that has been the border's capacity for the last century and a half. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

There's something to tack onto the push for net neutrality. The border should not offer priveleged passage to those who can pay more. Remember, while you may cross in a big truck, the border is actually tubes! —Alorael, who thinks this has been pushed farther than it should go. He is happy about this fact.
