Alex, I can spare some webspace and probably more than enough traffic volume, including FTP access. You could either make a new folder on http://stuff.ermarian.net (access info is on the site), or I could set up a new subdomain or something. (I'm already hosting my sister on a separate subdomain with her own ftp account, so that seems to work all right). :)

Congrats, Kel. Not only have you attained 5000 posts, but you have done it really quickly. I was once only 1000 behind you. Now, 2000 and steadily rising.

Thanks Aran. Um, but what exactly is FTP and how do I use it to upload my files?

What I think I'll do is upload the files and then just display them on the website I already have made.

I've always had luck treating a FTP folder like a regular file folder. I just copy and paste files to the ftp folder and somehow they magically appear in a new computer far, far away. Also, in my experience, it is better to use _ than a space in the filename, and to keep it all in lowercase.

Good Luck.

FTP is a protocol for uploading (and downloading) files. You need a client to connect to a server through FTP.

The easiest way (in XP) to use it without downloading a client is probably to set up a "Network Resource" in your explorer. You open your Network Settings, click "Add Network Resource" (or similar), then click "Next" twice, enter:

ftp://ftp.ermarian.net

and click Next again, uncheck the option "Anonymous login" and enter the user name you can find on this page. Then click Next again, and it should be done.

It will be like a regular folder, that you can copy stuff from and into. :)

Edit: And salmon is right about the filenames. Spaces are a no-no, and lower case, while not essential, is very recommendable (because it's less confusing).

Edit:

I also set up a web upload form yesterday at this place, using the same password as for the FTP access. It seems to work so far...

Congratulaitions!

Stolah u kulamé!

*smiles again because only two people in the world will understand the second line*

Okay, okay, I'll stop saying stuff that no one understands. And before anyone says anything, both lines were completely innocent congratulatory remarks.

Erm, I use windows 98. I also have no idea of how to open my network settings. It might be easier to explain this business of a client I should download.

Just use IE. It works fine for FTP. Unfortunately, Firefox doesn't work for an FTP upload. It works fine for viewing, but not for anything else. That's why I love the IETab Firefox extension.

As for clients, I like FileZilla best, and it has a very clean and easy interface. :)
