I'm taking this opportunity.... Wait, there is no opportunity, just boredom. Let me start again: I'm taking this moment of boredom to inquire who has ever heard of a game called "caesar III"? The game is a city-building strategy game, like Simcity. however, Caesar III is much better in almost every respect. Caesar III was my favorite game for about 3 years (right next to Age of Empires II and The Settlers II) until I got Zeus and Poseidon. C3 is an awesome game, but keeping the infrastructure from total collapse is a bit frustrating once your city grows to around 10,000 and over. You'll spend more of your time fixing infrastructural problems and instabilities than actually building your city. Zeus has a huge improvement with the "road block" that allows you far more control about where random people walk - no more firefighters exploring the edges of the map before walking through your city. Another change was the houses "merging" - Caesar III has this annoying way of arranging your house blocks in such a way as to leave most of the houses "stuck" as 1x1 squares and prevented from developing further, even though the city block could actually consist entirely of 2x2 squares. In Zeus, the houses have a fixed size and never merge. I've easily maintained cities between 8,000 and 10,000 in Zeus and that was about as frustrating as maintaining a population of 3,000-4,000 in Caesar III. I've heard of Caesar III and I used to play it, but now it's just too old and outdated (yes, I noticed the irony of posting this on a SpidWeb forum). However, if you've decided to buy it, you might want to get the Great Empires Collection instead. I only ever played the original... and that game was fun, not to mention fiendishly difficult (particularly the combat). I could never seem to keep a city out of debt for all that long... but that was a while ago, before I got a bit better at SimCity, Civilization, and the like. (Civilization II still rules!) Perhaps by "original", he means Caesar (I). I myself once played the Caesar II demo - I never got the hang of that. C1 apparently has graphics much like Exile (and early SimCity games?): Two-dimensional view from straight above. Like many older games in a series, only purists and utter fans would still play it I guess. As for me, I wouldn't even know where to get it. I doubt it's still being sold - it's nearly as old as Exile, and big companies abandon their older games more quickly than Jeff does. Edit: It has been officially abandoned and released as freeware by its publisher. From what I've heard and what the site says, it's not much though. -- Also, why the hell do you start trading only after you go into debt? That's a bit late... Yes, I did mean Caesar I. Well, the graphics were fairly laughable, and they did look unnaturally like the godawful 2d version of SimCity. It was still pretty fun though... Drat. I have a love-hate relationship with Wal-Mart. Yes, it is overly prevalent. Yes, it is always crowded with annoying people. Yes, Wal-Mart doesn't treat workers properly. But so often it is the only one that sells what I'm looking for. And it has a low price. (Whether this price is reasonable or not is debatable, but I'm not going back to Safeway anytime soon.) And most chain stores are similar to Wal-Mart in some respect and no one attacks them (unless they use "Happy Holidays" instead of Merry Christmas") Speaking of rampant commercialism, how about Starbucks? It's a groccery store that looks pretty much like every other large, rectangular store. I met someone from California who'd never heard of it either (and was completely in awe of it, for some odd reason). That's just one state away. I've only ever seen two, both in Oregon. Grocery stores seem to be generally a regional thing. It's interesting that we have chains across the whole country of everything but grocery stores. I doubt any of you not from general area of the country have heard of Nell's, (I work in a Nell's at the moment in fact, as I'm still job- hunting for a full-time job that wants an A+ certified technician), Giant (a somewhat larger chain found all around the northeast, also known as Martin's in some areas), or Weiss. Those are the only grocery stores in my town. We used to have a Food Lion, but Wal-Mart drove itout of business. Now that I mention it, I think I have seen Food Lions in other areas. I think there's one in Minneapolis, and I know I saw one in Atlanta. Maybe Food Lion is a national chain. Does anybody else have Food Lions anywhere near you? This game is such a classic despite what anyone says. Just like BoE I got the demo for this game with PC ZONE [thank sweet god for that magazine]. A few days later it was christmas and what else should I find beneath that bright red wrapper other than Caesar III? It was the sweetest. *cries* Only thing that really annoyed me was the mass genocide of civilians whenever there was a pack of wolves on the map. Oh wait and also when the granary couldn't get any workers cus no one lived nearby =/ but otherwise. It's a matter of practice. In almost all maps that have wolves (ie, northern provinces), fortifications are available. So before I start building, I seek out the wolves and kind of wall them in - preferably out of the way of the city. By the time I need the land, I usually have a legion to exterminate them, and that's it. Food Lion may not be in every state, but it's close. Now whenever I need groceries away from home, I know I can find a Food Lion. —Alorael, who believes Trader Joe's is now very widespread too, although it's less grocery-oriented and more like purchasing pieces of potluck.
