Stop insinuating that I am hateful.

As I said, I never knew my grandmother.

My great grandmother died about four years before my birth. From what I have heard of her I would have really enjoyed meeting her. She was the first in our family to emigrate here from Macedonia. She always said we are the descendants of Alexander the Great, but there is nothing to support that. It would have been nice to learn more of my culture from her, but it is difficult to mourn the loss of someone I have never met.

Your own posts seem to do a good enough job of conveying that impression.

I, too, find it difficult to mourn the loss of people I have never formed emotional relationships with. That doesn't mean I have qualms with offering a simple expression of sympathy for another's feelings, rather than challenging their validity.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I also back the fact that you should give respect to him even if you didn't know him. He did his part in securing your freedom.

Was he a Christian?

I wasn't insinuating that you hate. Just that you don't care.

My great-grandfather died a couple of years ago, and he went in WW1. My grandfather, however, went in WW2 and is still alive. My opinion is that even if you didn't knnow them, it is still sad because you will never see them again.

Why doesn't Hallmark have a line of sympathy cards for loved ones' damnations? It's not like Hallmark would have to believe in hell -- they're just selling stuff to customers. And there would seem to be a decent market segment of folks who claim to believe in hell. Why wouldn't they buy each other such cards? Could it be that, if it actually becomes personal, practically no-one really can believe in hell, even if they think they should? Or is my attempt to let the marketplace settle metaphysical questions somehow flawed?

This would most-probably cost more than it would benefit.

They could, alternatively, sell sympathy cards assuring the mourner that their loved one is not damned, but merely will still be in purgatory when the sun becomes a red giant and consumes the Earth. The market would be smaller, however, because only Catholics (and perhaps Episcopalians) believe in purgatory.

Even Catholics have abandoned Purgatory. You're now saved or damned with no middle ground.

Hang on. This was always the case -- purgatory was a stepping stone on the way to heaven, not a final destination. Are you sure it's now been taken out entirely?

Alorael is flat-out wrong. Catholics still believe in purgatory, unless my Jesuit teachers are wrong. Which would be far less likely than a Jew being wrong. About Christianity.

Purgatory is just a hopeful dwelling for people who didn't make it to heaven.

TM, I probably wouldn't have posted if he would have said no [believe it or not]. Saying he was probably in hell would not put a good light on this thread, since we're honoring and not degrading (well, most of us).

I doubt you asked that just out of curiosity. Also not responding to a "no" answer would have implied the deceased would go to hell in your opinion, being that everyone has read the earlier topic and knows your view.

I'm Catholic, and everyone I know believes in Purgatory. Ben, you know that people in purgatory do eventually end up in heaven, right? It's not limbo, for goodness' sake.

I have obviously confused my Catholic and Protestant theologies. Oops.

You're aware limbo (strictly, limbus infantium) isn't official doctrine and never was, right?
