Since it was brought up in the Programming discussion, I thought this would be a good time to find out what the average connection and computer speed of the player fanbase is. Poll Information This poll contains 4 question(s). 43 user(s) have voted. function launch_voter () { launch_window("http://www.ironycentral.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=poll;d=vote;pollid=mDzfYVpwqasM"); return true; } // end launch_voter function launch_viewer () { launch_window("http://www.ironycentral.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=poll;d=view;pollid=mDzfYVpwqasM"); return true; } // end launch_viewer function launch_window (url) { preview = window.open( url, "preview", "width=550,height=300,toolbar=no,location=no,directories=no,status,menubar=no,scrollbars,resizable,copyhistory=no" ); window.preview.focus(); return preview; } // end launch_window -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! How many people do you know who have a TERAbyte of memory (1,000,000,000,000 bytes of memory)? -------------------- I am the way into the doleful city I am the way into eternal grief, I am the way to a foresaken race. I don't know many, beyond some of the people here at the computing center. And even they usually use very normal machines when they're not calculating anything big. There are computers with several Terabytes or more, but I figured nobody here would have enough cash to own one privately, and nobody who has them at work would even dare to use them for private purposes such as surfing. :P -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! I don't really fit well into a couple of the questions on this poll: -- I have cable, but don't always have access to it, so sometimes I'm on dialup. -- I browse with Javascript enabled, but not Java. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! I knew there would be that kind of difficulties, but I tried to keep the number of questions down. For example, I use a 2.4 GHz CPU, but only a 256 MB RAM, which makes my computer amazingly slow and amazingly fast depending on how much stuff is running. I decided to ask the question about RAM rather than CPU, because I realized that my own pc is usually quite slow in spite of the 2.4 Ghz, because of the low RAM, so that limits it more. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Ugh. This computer is evil beyond belief. My laptop can run circles around this, but I can't be bothered to get it hooked up. What I am most aggrieved of, is that someone I know is shelling out an inordinate amount of money and has a 100 MEGABYTES/SECOND hook up. To say the least, I am impressed at the speed. -------------------- Aut Tace Aut Loquere Meliora Silencio Posts: 1487 | Registered: Sunday, February 10 2002 08:00 |

I shell out less than 25$ for six months, and I get download speeds exceeding 150 MBps. Student DSL, gotta love it. :P -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! i live at home, so i don't exactly have to pay for cable... plus i paid for this spiffy new (as of September) $1300 tower out of my own pocket, so you'd expect it to be good. :/ -------------------- Polaris - Weather balloons, ninjas, and your big daddy Wise Man. That's not memory, that's disk space. And that's more money than I would spend on a whole computer. Maybe I'd buy that if I had the money and a pressing need for more space than I could imagine needing for any non-commercial purpose, but I don't think that's exactly intended for the average "lay" consumer. —Alorael, who has 192 megs of RAM, placing him neatly between categories. He also goes under the category of having Javascript and techically Java, although the latter tends to crash his computer. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

That wasn't a technical term, TM. I get reduced rates as a student, and I pay the same as I would for a regular DSL connection. Thus, 'student DSL'. Of course I'm aware the connection isn't really a DSL, after all, it has to accomodate dozens of people at once in this house. -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Connection speed: varies between 17 and 19Kbps. It takes me about 10 minutes to download 1MB. Ouch. Memory: 128MB. Less than that though technically because WinXP takes up 16 and other supposedly vital applications normally leave me with about 30MB free. Ouch again. I need a new computer but need the money I would spend on it even worse. -------------------- -ben4808 For those who love to spam: CSM Forums RIFQ Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

Heh, I may not have anything greater than a dialup that runs at nearly 60Kbps (I never figured out why, it merely receives more data than it should :) ) but between my two older macs and my G5 that I bought, I managed to shell out enough to have one TB overall, alas, too bad I cannot use it as a raid array :) . -------------------- Life is short. Edit: Okay, 60 Kbps is believable. instead of that All-in-Wonder, you should've got a Radeon 9800 or X800... it's 256MB as opposed to 128MB... -------------------- Polaris - Weather balloons, ninjas, and your big daddy Wise Man. 128 MB is meager these days... I've seen laptops with six times that much, and more. -------------------- "Toleration is not the opposite of intoleration, but is the counterfeit of it. Celeron 1000, 256 megs of RAM, 10Mb/s connection through the university, 52x CD-ROM, 52-24-52x CD-RW/16x DVD, a 64 meg old-school Radeon that's a woeful piece of crap but, luckily, I don't play many graphic-intensive games, integrated PoS sound card, 20 gigs on C drive and 80 gigs on D drive, Windows XP Home SP2. Java and Javascript enabled in Opera and Firefox. It's not great, but what's sad is that I just got through a reasonable upgrade cycle because the thing was basically decomposing before my eyes. That's why the larger hard drive is the slave, it's brand new (replacing a 4GB drive that I really don't want to talk about). So now you know more than you ever wanted to. quote:Heh. I still have a computer purchased in 1995. It was the top of the line for it's time, too. Less than 400MHz processor, 16MB RAM, 1.09GB hard drive (you saw right. I've been conserving space for a long time now). I don't even want to know what graphics capability it has. Coincidentally, though, it does made a good Exile computer. :) -------------------- -ben4808 For those who love to spam: CSM Forums RIFQ Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |
