im stumped on this one. How do you get the research book behind the gate upstairs in the tower colony. i have the other 3 and i can't locate a crank or wheel to move it

You can't open that door and can't get those notes. Don't worry, though. There are others elsewhere. Just keep looking!

There is an easy one near where you enter the Tower Colony with the Royal advisor to the Tower.

About the quet that Lark gives to translate the scrolls.I personally cont find whats a problem with that.

It's more the fact that it's a quest you get in the first town, and it doesn't go away until you've practically beaten the game. In fact, if I recall correctly, you basically have to do an about face on the way to the final confrontation if you want to finish it. That confuses a lot of people, because they finish the game, having forgotten about the quest, and it's still in their journal. Or they might realize it earlier in the game, but people tend to get confused when something as early as that isn't resolved.

Also, there's the fact that you have to actually remember where you originally found Lark's scrolls so you can go back there and translate them. That trips up a lot of people.
