Hostile Effect Resistance will protect you from ALL damage, fire, cold, acid, etc. (Not sure about physical) Still, Hostile effect Res is VERY useful.
As for protection from weapons, im not exactly sure, it most likely protects you from physical attacks and nothing else, I know armor will help your resistances.
And when all else fails, equip/de equip the select items, and then check your resistances/armor and see what changed.

That is, Hostile Effect Resistance resists hostile effects, and Protection From Weapons protects from weapons. :P

Protection from weapons is usually only for melee attacks.

In BoA, it protects against missile attacks, too. Does it not do this in A4?

Er, I should say that the creature immunity against melee protects against missile attacks, which I think is more or less the comparable protection.

To summarize, no one knows anything definitive, and I would be wary to trust the given resistance percentages.

I can only tell you for sure that HER will protect you from effects like slowing, and it likely reduces elemental damage as well. PWR reduces physical damage in general.

Hostile effect resistence is basically for every 1% HER you gain +1% resistence in all resistences except stunning.

I don't know about protection from weapons, it just seemed to add to your armour (and I'm not certain it gave the other additional benefits of armour)

Hostile Effect Resistance doesn't protect against slowing.

I feel embarrassed; I have not played Avernum 4 in a while so I do not remember what new effects there are. Perhaps charming and poison apply?
