Mac Beta Test call was Sept 23, this release is almost 2 months after that.

Pc Beta Test hasnt been called yet. You cant really look for a release date when the large-scale testing hasnt even begun.

The Windows testing doesn't have to wait for the game to be completed and is less balance focused. It's also free of the egregious human error bugs and more prone to porting bugs. In theory, if all goes well, the Windows test could be very short. If all doesn't go well and there's some persistent bug, it could take... oh, a few months.

I still don't understand why Jeff doesn't just use cross-platform libraries like SDL. He's not doing anything very complex with graphics or sound. It would reduce porting time to a week or two at the most.
He writes everything for Mac and Windows, so you think he would plan ahead and code with cross-platform compatibility in mind.

It's been a while since he wrote a totally new engine--Geneforge was the beginning of his current one, and that was 3.5-4 years ago. He's not going to take that kind of trouble until he's ready to do another new engine, which could be a while. BoA's engine had its roots in Nethergate from a very very long time ago. ;)
Essentially he seems to like the game-writing much more than the coding, so he spends lots of time on the former and as little as possible on the latter. And porting may take more time, but that's time that's later rather than right now.

Hopefully the A4 release date isnt near the Oblivion release date as unfortunitly A4 would be guarnteed a loss of a sale because I have barely any money.

Except that A4 doesn't actually run off the GF engine — it just looks like it. Apparently 70% of the A4 engine is new.

Okay, well, the graphics engine is the same then. :P

And if he was going to such great lengths why didn't he just give us a new one that looked a little more like Avernum? :(

Because the Geneforge graphics are more cutting-edge, and as long as he was adapting the Geneforge engine he decided to keep as much as possible, which included the graphics.

—Alorael, who isn't entirely convinced by that 70%. A4 is very clearly built on the Geneforge engine, and it was even more obvious during testing. Yes, there are large changes, maybe even 70% changes, but that 30% is a very important 30%.

I wasn't referring so much to the graphics as the keyboard shortcuts. Am I the only one who misses being able to target spells by hitting letter keys? Or being able to use a shortcut for every button on the screen. Or being able to use "look" which I think would still be nice to have; there have been a few times I missed stairs or whatever because they were mostly hidden behind walls.

I thought that there it wasn't any windows testing, and that jeff just released every game after preparing it without needing a beta testing, but if there is, then i want to sign!
