I know one of the things I didnt finish (was it on Harmony Isle?) was fixing a vat, I didnt have the right tool--what tool is needed?

I did search, didn't see anything.

There is a hammer right next to the vat on a table. Pick it up and put it in your inventory, now (given that you have enough Mechanics) you can repair it.
