My mage tried to put on a pair of bracers and the game would not let me, but I could place them on my priest, fighter, and archer. This does not seem right since your character could start out a pure priest and finish the game as a fighter, thief or whatever you wanted. Barring some inexplicable bug, it's possible that the character was already over its weight limit. When you clicked on the bracers and left them stuck to the cursor, the character couldn't put them back on (or back in inventory) because they were too heavy. —Alorael, who is at least sure that it is not supposed to happen. Unless they are natural mages they cannot wear anything that encumbers, so it's generally a good idea not to give them gloves, armour or boots. Sandals and Robes work fine.
