Er, I looked it up in a dictionary. Failing to find the German for 'steam-roller operator', which, I have on good authority, is very long, I settled for the next longest I could find without spending as long as a piece of string. -------------------- Riot Shields Voodoo Economics It's just business Cattle prods And the IMF I trust I can rely on your vote Posts: 530 | Registered: Sunday, September 1 2002 07:00 |

I have it on reasonably good authority that you've misspelled that word. It should be "...schifffahrts..." Not that it makes any difference, since I'm sure there are much easier way to say that someone is the captain of an... er... steamship company? —Alorael, who would like to know what happened to spaces dividing words. Sometimes compound words work, and other times they really ought to be decently divided into bite-sized pieces. We had a spelling reform a few years back. And yes, following the new rules it should have three 'f'. But I don't agree with the ridiculous thing and ignore it. And yes, it's the captain of a steamship company. [ Tuesday, June 03, 2003 08:42: Message edited by: ef ] -------------------- Polaris Posts: 1828 | Registered: Saturday, January 11 2003 08:00 |

The longest one i've ever come across is: Verkehrswegeplanungsbeschleunigungsgesetz (41 letters) a law to speed up the planning of traffic ways. Or the ever popular: Sauerstofflaschendruckausgleichventil (37 letters) an oxygen bottle pressure control valve -------------------- ... Posts: 647 | Registered: Wednesday, February 19 2003 08:00 |

Really, I like the English system. If expressing it requires three words or less, you could compound it if you like. If not, don't bother. Everyone gets things done a lot easier that way. And then you have the French and, um, most languages, which don't have compound words at all. Against these infidels, we and the Germans are comrades in arms, and I suppose they can put up with our insane lack of structure and we can put up with their line-filling words for the sake of solidiarity in the face of a common threat. -------------------- desperance -- je me souviens arena -- et je me souviens de vous Posts: 2449 | Registered: Monday, October 15 2001 07:00 |

I, uh, knew that. Yeah. I was just going for a literal translation. Really. BTW: Jigga, a steam-roller operator would be a "Dampfwalzenfahrer". -------------------- ... Posts: 647 | Registered: Wednesday, February 19 2003 08:00 |
