I was under the impression that you cannot set your displayed name to one that is already taken by someone else. However, when I attempted to make a unique index in my member database, I saw that on the contrary there are quite a lot of duplicate displayed names - I first figured this was a mistake on my end, made while gathering the data or when entering it into the table. But then I checked a few of them, and found that they really do have the same name: Am I missing something? Edit: Well, Saunders and Mystery Man are obvious, but the rest? Edit: On another note, I just combined tables to find out the most prolific topic starters: [ Wednesday, January 11, 2006 00:15: Message edited by: The Piper of Hamlin ] -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Well, I'll be jiggered. I suppose, then, that the only restriction on publicly displayed names is that you can't change your PDN to someone else's login name. -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

Is your login name Thuryl? Edit: Jiggered indeed. —Alorael, who is not in fact Alorael. Yes, his login name is Thuryl. And I think the only restriction on PDNs is that you can't change your PDN to anything that UBB doesn't want you to. It's more random than one might think. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Smoo: Get ready to face the walls! Especially with punctuation marks, I've realized. Yes. Stupid. And omg, I have started 39 topics. I don't seem to remember that many. I thought only about 15, but... And Aran, did you not say a couple of stat topics ago that your total topic count was still a single number? EDIT: Omg, I said omg. And omg, I said omg three more times. Omg. There we go again... [ Wednesday, January 11, 2006 01:44: Message edited by: Spring ] -------------------- I'll put a Spring in your step. Posts: 2396 | Registered: Saturday, January 29 2005 08:00 |

That's probably subconscious suggestion. *points at moniker* quote:And striving he must err... in my defence, you also underestimated your topic count. :P Also, this only counts the PPP3 stuff that's currently still on the boards - I've started more that are in PPP1&2. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. That is indeed interesting! I wonder if some of those repeats with consecutive numbers were generated by an error on account creation. Or if more people than we knew have had their accounts deleted... *wonders if we still have an invisible newbie eater prowling* Oh, the wonders of program logic! -------------------- I am a mater of time and how . 'twas but a test, your honor. :) -- Also, UBB is not a program. It is more of a state of mind. A state of mind quite befitting for a board whose unofficial meme is "Leave your sanity at the door". -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Well, a lot of them are in RWG, of course. Also, some of them are duplicates. Quite a lot, actually. They were started in one place and moved to the other, and are now archived in both forums. -------------------- Encyclopaedia Ermariana • Forum Archives • Forum Statistics • RSS [Topic / Forum] My Blog • Polaris • I eat novels for breakfast. Wow. I'm amazed at how many of those topics I had forgotten about until I saw their titles again. That brings back a lot of happy memories. Thanks for posting that, Aran! Posts: 907 | Registered: Monday, July 15 2002 07:00 |

Awwww. How cute. Now when are you going to start grading them in the categories of usefulness, cleverness, humor, and evil? For some people, enjoying a sense of superiority becomes the overwhelming reason for participating in threads. Edit - this gem is truly some fine work. Interestingly enough, Drakefyre's topic count is only 28 (including PPP1, but not PPP2, which isn't yet indexed), and Alorael has a meagre 12! Is post count inversely related to topic count? o_O Edit: The first of them, as one might wonder from the title, isn't actually Alo's. He's just the first non-deleted poster, and I failed to take that possibility into account in the program. Considering that "EraserHead" and "General Moderator Election Poll" were both official SpidWeb business, he's really only started nine topics. -------------------- quote: Posts: 1115 | Registered: Sunday, May 15 2005 07:00 |

Sweet man. You ought to make the MySQL database files available on the Internet so we can download them and perform our own queries. *sees that he has started exactly as many topics as Spidweb. Aran, you've given me the feeling that I'm being watched. I'd be willing to bet money that a large part of the 54 topics I have started were in the BoA forums back when I first joined a little over 3 years ago, when I spammed. A lot. I'm STILL canned. But if there have been duplicate names, how is it that I STILL can't get rid of the period at the end of my displayed name? I have the same problem with Sir David, actually, which is why I am the last remnant of the gender-bending spree that came and went about a year ago. I don't mind it so much, though. I'm not particularly hostile toward newbies, but it's fun to confuse them sometimes. Aran, would you mind posting my list of topics? I'm actually surprised I started that many topics. I stay away, mostly. Let he who is without sin cast the first post and all that. You might want to check New Silvar Inn v2.0. I think Saunders might have started that one with her dead account. The Personality Test might be mine, but I don't remember starting it. Huge Images, EraserHead, and the General mod poll are all official business. Proper behavior for cultists is close to it. That means as few as five of those threads may be non-official topics started by me. One of those is a post count topic and another is close to it. I really am a complete failure at contributing meaningfully. I'd start a "Should Alorael be Canned?" poll, but that goes against my poll-starting ethos. —Alorael, who is also somewhat worried by the proportion of threads initiated by him that are under the heading of RWG. That's really a bad sign. The fact that only one isn't General or RWG is even worse. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

If it makes you feel any better, I think I may have started even fewer topics than that. Of the ones I can remember, one was on Misc, one was in BoA, one was in General and the rest were on the mod board (and hence invisible to mortal eyes). -------------------- The Empire Always Loses: This Time For Sure!
