The word "ruse" appeared within the last month in a case I read for class. The word "breath" appeared in a drug label I was skimming through for work last week. These are exceptions to what are otherwise profoundly colloquial expressions. Posts: 2242 | Registered: Saturday, April 10 2004 07:00 |

You didn't understand the last question- "breath" is used often enough. Bated, however, is not. (Abated, on the other hand, is.) -------------------- 人 た ち を 燃 え る た め に 俺 は か れ ら に 火 を 上 げ る か ら 死 ん だ Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

Just today I was out of breath, so I had to catch my breath. A few breaths of fresh air, and I was once again in condition to wait quietly with bated breath. Two days ago I read about a simple ruse that had far-reaching consequences. —Alorael, who would like to know when you last read of a bated ruse or elaborate breath. Fun fact: in the sport of falconry, for a falcon to "bate" is for it to flap its wings wildly. -------------------- My BoE Page Bandwagons are fun! Roots Hunted! Posts: 9973 | Registered: Saturday, March 30 2002 08:00 |

You found that out with Google, right? You didn't actually know it beforehand, right? Right? There's a joke in there somewhere about Salmon and baited breath, but I can't quite find it. -------------------- Sex is easier than love. Posts: 1861 | Registered: Friday, February 11 2005 08:00 |

Yes, probably. Anyway, I read the term 'elaborate ruse' in my newspaper a couple of days ago, and in the same article, 'bated breath' was used. And I wrote it in a story today. -------------------- I'll put a Spring in your step. Polaris Posts: 2396 | Registered: Saturday, January 29 2005 08:00 |

Try to think of the last time you have seen the words "wreak" (any tense) and "havoc" separately. (Okay, wreak is used otherwise on occasion, but not havoc) -------------------- The Encyclopaedia Ermariana <-- Now a Wiki! Is anything ever overweaning but pride? For that matter, is 'overweaning' ever used except to define 'hubris'? -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem. We must discover how things really seem. Posts: 3335 | Registered: Thursday, September 4 2003 07:00 |

Havoc actually comes up quite often (well, relatively often) without any wreaking, but wreak never goes with anything but havoc, vengeance, devastation, destruction, and so on. Overweaning is occasionally used with words besides pride and arrogance, but not often. In fact, I'd say that more than half of the other uses are actually errors in which the writer really should be using overwhelming. —Alorael, who is overweaningly aware of the literary havoc so evident in the internet. He is pained by the masses who wreak corruption upon the innocent and unoffending English language. Posts: 14579 | Registered: Saturday, December 1 2001 08:00 |

*Awaits with bated breath the next elaborate ruse to work the previously discussed words into the conversation.* -------------------- A C, an E flat, and a G walk into the Tower of the Magi. One could wait with bat breath. It would be unpleasant to everyone nearby. :P Edit: Not a typo. Erika, you triad signature is a good example of what I call a small subset joke -- like calling a tiny pocketknife an h-bar. -------------------- It is not enough to discover how things seem to seem.
