I would enjoy having avatars; it would give an added level of individuality. I guess on these boards the best we get are the smileys. :D -------------------- There are three kinds of people in the world: those who think, those who think they think, and those who would rather die than think. Alo, I'm on dialup. The SR boards allow fairly large avatars and I still don't get much in the way of performance degradation. I believe, also, that if you have the ability to allow all members to have avatars, there is the power to remove the priviledge from those who abuse it. Also, though I am even more hazy about this, moderators can be given extra powers, in this case, wouldn't it be possible to allow mods to deal with infractions, without having to bother Drakey or *i? And to be a blatant hack and use a take-off, Deep Down, You Know You Should Have Avatars. Incidentally, you can go to the first unread post, just not from the forum page. You have to enter the thread then there's a little button above the bit saying 'Hello <your name here>.' This button is called 'Jumpt to new posts.' This button makes the boards significantly less irritating to navigate. -------------------- Voice of Reasonable Morality Posts: 961 | Registered: Thursday, June 12 2003 07:00 |

Eh, if a page number is light blue instead of dark, it means it's a new page. So, by clicking on the page a little before that, you take yourself to the right page where the new posts start. And you read away. -------------------- -ben4808 For those who love to spam: CSM Forums RIFQ Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |

We used to have Avatars on IkonBoard. According to Mariann, they consumed too much bandwidth. -------------------- Your flower power is no match for my glower power!! Posts: 3726 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

One should not complain about the software here. First of all, this software is cheaper than many other BB softwares out there. Second, at least we have UBB CLASSIC. we could have normal UBB, which i would never pay for adn it looks just liek many free BB's. Recently, it's been harder to find good BB software for little prices, even IPB is no longer free. SO, jasut shut up about the BB software, its not goign to change unless Irony Central was to crash or were to lose its hosting by its package beign canceled. Then why not just have people supply their own avatars and not allow board-hosted ones? -------------------- 私のバラドですそしてころしたいいらればころす Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you display images, you still have to transfer data through the server which consumes bandwidth. -------------------- Your flower power is no match for my glower power!! Posts: 3726 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

In short? No. The image is transferred through a separate connection from the client to the image's server. None of the image data is ever handled by the Spidweb server, period. If you watch carefully, your browser connects to desperance.net to download that image. The only data that the SW server handles is: <img src="http://djur.desperance.net/cgi-bin/avatar.cgi?.png" alt=" - "> Literally, that string, with the URL replaced with whatever the image's URL is. So no, external avatars would cost SW essentially nothing in bandwidth and hard drive space -- and I thought they had unlimited bandwidth, anyway? Narrow pipe, maybe? The concerns about big/inappropriate external avatars are fair, but no more so than concerns about big/inappropriate external images in threads. Nothing that the mods can't and shouldn't handle. Okay. That makes sense. They don't have infinite bandwidth, they pay a fee from a service provider based on the bandwidth they consume. I think they have a set amount of bandwidth for their current rate and would have to switch to a more expensive plan if they exceeded it or be shut down temporarily. -------------------- Your flower power is no match for my glower power!! Of course, a downside to UBB is that mods can't handle avatar (or other profile) problems. If someone's FAT FACE is taking up the whole screen, we need an admin to fix it. Posts: 3234 | Registered: Thursday, October 4 2001 07:00 |

She did say that she expects the "unlimited bandwidth" part of that agreement to end soon, because the webhoster no longer even offers that deal to new customers. But yeah, for the time being, I really don't understand how SW can complain about bandwidth, unless she was saying something incorrect. -------------------- Arancaytar: Every time you ask people to compare TM and Kel, you endanger the poor, fluffy kittens. Imban, you can place limits on Avatar sizes, both in length x height and image size. (At least, that's the way it was when we had 'em.) The only thing Spidweb has to worry about is if they allow avatars hosted on their own site- and they can disable that pretty easily by deleting all of them and just having a tiny spider. (One image means the same bandwidth use, no matter how many times it's used.) -------------------- 私のバラドですそしてころしたいいらればころす Posts: 6936 | Registered: Tuesday, September 18 2001 07:00 |

I don't see why we need avatars so much anyway. It takes the same amount of time to look at the avatar on the post as to read the moniker. I'm just as happy/happier without them. -------------------- -ben4808 For those who love to spam: CSM Forums RIFQ Posts: 3360 | Registered: Friday, June 25 2004 07:00 |
