Quick Note About Graphics in Avernum 4

quote:
Graphics and sound have always been our games' great weak point. Graphics are expensive. Hand-drawn graphics are very expensive.
I was never impresed by the graphics of Avernum. But without a major corprate backing you won't ever be able to produce impresive 3D models or beautiful cell shading anamation.

I say who cares. We never got up in arms about the graphics. We keep coming back for the seemless addicting old fashoned gameplay. The major improvement I saw between exile and avernum was an improved interface. Never once did I think "wow what nice graphics".

Though the poster art is "Better" from a strictly production aspect. It sticks out and is far less seemless than its older "lesser" progeneter. 3D models want to look ugly and fake it takes alot of work to trick the human mind for even an instant. I honstly think the new graphics make the game ugly not because of any flaw they have but because they don't match the world they are in. It would take scraping most of the current in game graphics and fully rendering them to give the models the feel that they belong.

In short 3D trades in the classic feel we all know and love for stuff that couldn't make you say wow ten years ago.

Anyone notice the blessed steel helm is weaker than a normal steel helm

blesed steel 1-6+2 (3-8)
steel 1-4+4 (5-8)

or that a fine craft pike does less damage 1-7/level than a blessed hailberd 1-8/level and costs more to buy and sell.

*the spell bind foe will change combat tactics alot it was overpowered and removed in later games.
*Magic items are not highlighted in red keep your eyes out.
*AoE spells were removed in the avernum engine in favor of multi target spells with the accption of cloud of blades (apears in avernum 2 and on).
*specal skills like barter and magery can't have points put in them and may only be trained by a porfesional.
*Training itself must be done by a porfesional not just in town.
*The older avernum engines choked on values over 100
*First aid has and will always suck.
*High tool use is optional as unlock doors can beat almost every lock
*spell formulas for damage have changed check the read me
*Spells can be only levels 1-3
*Haste at level three is very powerful in the older games

I can't think of any more off the top of my head. I still had fun with the older games when they first came out. And I think you will like them too. Try out the demos and see if you like the games without all the nice perks jeff has added over the years.

I am trying to make my way through the vampires castle however I am running into some problems.

I have defeated him twice already. once in the entry way and also in his dinning hall when he has the blue crystal. Many of the doors are magically warded and can't be removed with a level 3 unlock doors spell (I used the editor and level 4 and 5 don't work either) yet they use the same prompt as doors that can normally be defeated with the spell.

Unlike most of Jeff's puzzles there was no pop up to tell me to look elsewhere for the solution. I did any way before troubling you guys and no one in town seems to care that I can't get through the door at the lower right of the map that seems to lead to stairs. (far sight)

Any help would be great and I would be more than happy to provide any more information if needed.

PS: is anyone planing to make a walkthrough or faq for the stock adventures?
