Personally I found the "kill" scroll quite effective against them

I killed all the cockroaches first. So I go back, get the ring, get the magical training then go to the Mage area of Ft. Emergence. The Head mage told me that they have a spell book hidden nearby that was in a secret passage, guarded by a magic barrier. Where is it? :confused:
