is there a time limit attached to the quests or can i wander the world taking care of any other areas first?

Wander as much as you like. Everything is terribly urgent, because there is this rival team of Celtic heroes who are just about to beat you to every punch. But somehow, in reality, not.

Avernum/Exile 3 and a few Blades scenarios with timers are the only places where you can't take your time. It's amazing how many places have battles frozen in time until you appear.
