is it useless to carry food since no possibility to rest? rest would be needed especially at start since distance between town and battlefield (mines etc) is "bit" long so alot useless walking and wasted time.

In A4 and A5, food became a usable item. It restores a tiny amount of health. Thus, you can use it to restore relatively trivial damage without wasting a healing potion or spell. It can also be consumed in mass quantities to heal more severe wounds.
