Portal System question

Does the portal system stay active the entire game?

Because if it does then the floor space off to one side of the path between the arrival and departure points makes a great place to store stuff. I just want to know if I should collect all of it and relocate the whole pile elsewhere.

I have also decided that next time through I am collecting one or two of EVERYTHING I come across as I will probably need it. I still can't beleive I threw away an extra Icy Geode then had to go find another one later. Bah!! :o

Each section can only hold so many items, so don't put too many in one section. Other than that, it's a great strategy.
