Dismissing Characters

When you get a recruit (such as the soldier in the Drypeak Mines or the Abandoned Thald) when you press Dismiss, it says "The creature wanders off, presumably to where it was before." When I go back to where I found it, it is not there? Are there any reasons why or is it that they are gone for good?
