Yes, it is better to be somewhat arrogant if you want to be pro-shaper. However, you can still be fairly nice to people and still be counted as pro-shaper, just don't overdo it. I find it best to not give an opinion unless directly asked, and to also make sure that I always get the maximum out of a given quest.
